Sounds like a diesel when the engine is cold
#31
"mechanical" is fine, "metallic" is bad. Not sure what causes the dieseling sound though. It doesn't do that on warm starts, the colder outside the louder it gets.

I believe it is normal coz it happens on my 2011 G37x too.
Maybe I'm paranoid. It wouldn't be the first time I starting looking for problems where none existed. But creating a thread for opinions is a harmless thing to do, so here it is.
When the engine is cold, regardless of ambient temperature, I swear the engine sounds rough and loud, like a diesel (thwack thwack thwack). Soon as it warms up, everything is fine. Of course, I realize the idle is high when starting a cold engine, but it's... different, somehow.
I've only had the car for 8 months. There are only 9,800 miles on it, and I'm running Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic. The car is mechanically bone-stock. While I've been vaguely aware of this since buying the car, I became attentive to this suspicion the other day when the wife got in the car and asked me why it sounded "like that".
Crank up the volume and maybe you'll hear it. I suppose it could be the acoustics of the garage. Or when I'm between the houses (shared driveway), the acoustics there come into play too. Or as I suggested up front, maybe I'm feeding a silly paranoia. IDK.

let your car warm up so the sound at least goes away before driving off and your engine will thank you at 100k miles.
end.

Dont drive the G for a few days and you will be greeted with an even louder tin can with nuts and bolts sound for about 30 seconds.
I dont mind the diesel sound too much. Sometimes I feel it is too quiet after driving for long periods.

Just passed my 1 yr anniversary with the G37. I live in Syracuse, bought my car in Rochester in your hometown :-), and YES, at cold startup anywhere along Upstate NY near Lake Ontario, it sounds like a diesel for 30 seconds then all good :-) I was told it was the way the engine was and have had no problems.

I used to really hate that place, because I had a truly horrible sales experience there almost 15 years ago, and have been p1ssed at them ever since. But honestly, I've had a couple of positive service experiences lately, and they've totally redeemed themselves.
And bringing that around on-topic to this totally, agonizingly dead-horse discussion... both mechanic and service manager there commented to me on the noise this engine makes cold.

^^^ Too early to tell whether this is normal or not, only Nissan engineers know it for sure. Unless Nissan officially publishes what the cause of the noise, all other explanations are just guess works. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to claim this does nothing bad to your car because every one of them has it. The oldest 3.7L I think would be no more than 4 years. This is a legitimate long term concern, we will see how this story end up with in 10 years.
