I'm going to ask a noob question, I'm about to do my first oil change at 3300miles, I assume it's fine to do mobile 1 synthetic for the first change. Or should I use dino oil until a certain mileage?

Somewhere along the way, I got the impression that you start synthetic on the second oil change, so that's what I did @7000 miles. Right or wrong, that's what I did. Penzoil Ultra Synthetic with a K&N oil filter.

I've gone to syn after 5k miles on both my Gs and none have ever had any oil consumption issues and the mpg has always been excellent compared to a lot of other members' posted mpg #s.
I was using Mobil1 5-30 w/ M1 filters but I now use Castrol Edge 5-30 w/ Bosch, K&N, or M1 filters (depending on what special combo O'Reillys is running at the time). I go 5k between changes and of course save & document all receipts
One thing I can't understand is a 326hp motor w/ an oil filter the size of a shot glass
I'm going to use the filter for the Infiniti v8 (got it by mistake) that's almost twice the size as per this post~

LOL @shot glass! So true.

My mileage recently bumped from 18.8 to 19.0 to 19.2, and quite frankly it had settled down to 18.8 for the last four thousand miles. I've done nothing different in driving behavior, nor been on any big highway roadtrip... except for going synthetic last month.

Coincidence? IDK. But I'm not complaining.

lol, i agree. i've always used the bigger filter on my G's, both the g35 & g37. strangely enough, the bigger filter is stock on my wife's CRV so i just buy a bunch of WIX units.

It was cleverly hidden in the stickies of the Engine and Drivetran forum stickies where nobody would ever think to look.

If following the warranty OCI, a quality oil like Pennzoil Yellow bottle would be fine. Since I do it myself and I value my time, I use Pennzoil Ultra and a Pureone filter. I do this for the same price as a conventional oil change available commercially.

Not everyone likes to or are able to DIY. If you want synthetic, but don't want to pay exorbitant prices, call around to find a place that will let you bring a jug of oil from Walmart. This happens to be the right amount. Many places will do this for around $15+.

Synthetic or conventional can be used whenever you want and you can go back and forth with no harm.

I've recently come to appreciate Walmart as an excellent source for name-brand automotive supplies at the lowest prices around. I go there for cleaning supplies, and it's where I last bought my oil. Granted, it's a trashy store (where I live) with equally eclectic clientele, but you can't deny the savings.

There used to be a conventional wisdom that you only start using synthetic oil early in an engine's life, and if you go synthetic that you can't go back. Whether or not that was once true, I don't know. But after researching synthetic oil, I've come away with the opinion that it doesn't, or no longer, matters.

I don't believe it ever really mattered, to be honest. As long as you change it before it breaks down... how does it matter what you use?

That said, for peace of mind I use Mobil 1 and a Wix filter. Change it every 5k.

OP - are you seriously going to take a $40k+ car to Jiffy Lube? I would not let one of those places, or others like them, touch any of my cars.
Do it yourself, synthetic or not, as it an easy chore requiring only one beer. And by all means stay away from Fram filters and other brands made by Fram. They are junk.

Because I referenced you in my post. That's how these things work.

Wow. This thread is still going.

Well I am the OP, and YES, I did go to Jiffy Lube. I used the coupon and had to pay extra for the Synthetic. $25 total. That's cheaper than if I did it myself. And they were done in less than 15 min.....cleaned my windows....gave it a quick sweeparoo with the shop vac....checked filters....tire pressure...etc. I watched them the whole time. They added exactly 5.2qts

I really don't think its a big deal (going to Jiffy Lube). They change oil for a living. That's all they do. All day. Why should I think that I can do it better?

I don't want to do it. I don't feel like it. And its not because I'm lazy or incapable of doing it.

And I do realize its a $40,000 car. Whoop-dee-freakin-doo.

I took my car to Jiffy Lube.

And drove it 400 miles to the beach the very next day.

My car has not exploded yet.

Exactly. Too much fuss over a glorified Nissan. While it's a great car in many ways, you'd have to be a complete rube to pay $40K for the Sedan, no matter how it was configured. And yes, your coupon brought you under where you would have been if you'd done it yourself.

Good for you, PENROSE. How many miles until the next oil change?
