What aspects of the driving experience on the G aren't as smooth as on the BMW? In what way are they not "smooth"?
I find the automatic 2012 G37 to be totally fine in terms of smoothness.
The 6MT isn't so great, mostly because of the short engagement point of the clutch - but I don't know if that's any better on the BMW. There's also the shifter vibration which is somewhat surprising, but not something that affects the driving really.
By the way, I find steep hill starts to be quite annoying on the 6MT because of the double whammy of an abrupt clutch engagement point, and a weak hand brake. Really bad match for San Francisco...

Really steep hills suck for manuals in general. The G seems particularly challenging on this front, but I haven't tried the BMW. Hard to get steep hill starts on the G without some clutch burn, and hard to avoid the occasional engine bucking or even stall.
I dread the possibility of getting stuck in stop-and-go traffic on a steep road driving my G37S 6MT - seems like a potentially clutch-destroying and engine-damaging (due to bucking) experience...

2012 Audi A4 vs. 2012 BMW 328i vs. 2012 Mercedes-Benz C250 Comparison Test
Saw this article on Edmunds.com, comparing 4 Cyl Sport Sedans (A4, C250, 328i), and I couldn't help thinking that for roughly the same money, I would get a loaded G37xS all day every day. And yes, I realize I'm probably a bit biased.

328i EPA - 23 city/34 highway/27 combined
Observed - 23.6 mpg over 1,455 miles. Worse than my V6 Maxima. EPA numbers are always inflated big time on turbo 4 bangers.
And... $50,745 for a 4 banger, seriously??

They probably flogged the thing. When I was flogging my G, in my flogging stage after the break in I was getting a good 18 mpg, if that. In the meantime the thing is almost as fast as the G, which I'm sure 36 mpg can be had if one doesn't flog the thing.

I am not going to reject your assumption of "flog driving", as we definitely will see more reports of real-world mpg. But with complaints already floating around EPA's unrealistic mpg rating on turbo 4s, the Edmund's observation is legitimate in my book, but we will see...
