DIesel sound from my G37X

Does some of you can hear a repetitive knocking sound when at idle ?all windows closed.

I know there's a certain sound from the engine valves, but it's not this one. sound like metal knocking sound, regular, that almost follow the engine rythm.

Wonder if it could be a heat shield. Last time i was at the dealer i tried to replicate it, and guess what ? nothing

Does this happen all the time? If so, it's definitely not normal. It might be related to your oil. If you are using conventional mineral oil, you may get some valvetrain noise (and wear!). You're best bet is to use Nissan esther oil or a good synthetic like Pennzoil Ultra. However, if the noise only happens for about 40 seconds on cold start, that's pretty common, no matter what type of oil you use.

Have you tried to isolate the sound from outside the car?

try a better oil. upgrade to full synth, or to Esther.
the infiniti variable valve event and lift in our cars is very picky to oil.

Thank you and sorry for the dealy in my answers

Yes i use mineral oil basic. Change oil every 6 000 km as recommanded for Canada.

I have tried to figure out , where is coming from. It seems to be under the engine , more on the passenger side.

For me it's a mettalic sound, don't come from the engine, i really think it's under, that's why i think it's an heat shield

I don't keep my car for a long time, so i don't want to spend a lot on oil, and i want to follow the minimum recommanded to not void the warranty.

If possible take it to the dealer right before they close & tell them you want to be there next morning to start it up cold and see if you can replicate the issue. This is assuming the dealer is nearby

I get this sound from my car all the time. It's very annoying and I hope its not damaging anything. Dealer took a look and heard the noise, but claimed the sound was the heat shield. Sounds like the engine to me, but who knows.

i had the whole transmission replaced at 2,000miles or so.
i kept going back and trying to show them, but the sound was coming & going.
it sounded like a bad input shaft/throw out bearing so i was very adamant about bringing it back. it would happen on idle, and when accelerating in 1st & 2nd gear. between 900rpm-2500rpm. sounded like metal on metal banging. also it would happen the last 2 rotations of the crank when shutting the engine off, and the first 2 rotations when starting the engine up.

finally after months, and a consumer affairs dispute- they realized the problem.
and replaced the whole tranny for me.

That's interesting. My new car displayed a particular valve train type noise when first start up cold, but would get quieter when warm. At 500 miles, I changed the oil and filter to Mobil 1 5w-30 and Mobil 1 filter. Now quiet at start up. Sounds like my 08 did. Try Mobil 1 oil.
