XM Free Trial - 3 months or 12 months?

Hi all, I purchased my car Jan 5, 2011 and noticed XM was already active. I called up XM and they informed me that my free trial had been activated in November and would expire Novemeber 2011.

I purchased the car with 10 miles so I know there's nothing shady with the car, but why are they activating my free XM trial? If everyone is supposed to get 3 months, then I'll keep my mouth shut... However, if they changed the free trial to 12 months, I'm going to have to get my extra two months...

So for those who recently purchased their cars, how long have your free trials been?

My free trial was three months, but an incompetent salesman forgot to activate when delivered; hence, I was on the dealer's plan for about two months before anyone at the dealer realized what had happened. It was then that XM activated my three-month trial. So, I managed to eke out five months of trial before paying--certainly not as good as a 12 month trial.

If they indeed say your account is good through November I wouldn't say a word, I wouldn't worry about those 2 months. Once your "trial" is over call to cancel and then say you're just paying too much for everything and have to cut back. They'll typically say they have a better deal and give you the $77/yr plan (comes out to like $83 give or take), much better than the $150/yr standard offer.

the "trial" i have in my car is a bunch of crap. i get 10 channels, all pretty much for what I would say is for a redneck. there are 2 country channels, a jazz, a 70's R&B, a 70's rock, one Trance, Blue Collar Radio, and a couple other crappy ones. I'm a 26 yr old male..... I dont listen to any of that crap besides the Trance station so if they wanted to base my purchase of their radio from that selection, they are insane.

Howcome you get only 10 channels? Did you call XM to find out why?

I got 3 months on my G35.

My G37 is over 6 months and still free. Now...realize I've had tons of problems with it, so this is all comp time with them hoping I'll keep service when they can finally get it right.

Definitely something wrong w/ your hookup, you should be getting the full menu, something like 100+ stations and traffic, etc. No reason to put up w/ it, the full menu is pretty good except for commercials every 10 minutes on the comedy channels

I had this problem as well, just twist the right side dial for tuning to scroll through the other channels between the 10's

I already had an XM account before I got the car and had them give me three free months once I got the G. I thought I was good but after the three months was up they disconnected it. I haven't had the patience to call their customer service and tell them to fix it as it's always painful calling them up.

I don't miss it that much but I would like it back. I find the sound quality is pretty poor (worse than FM), and the audio system in my G is pretty bad, so between those two things there's no point listening to music, but I still like it for talk radio.

Unrelated perhaps, but I think that XM/Sirius sound quality has degraded A LOT from when I first got it in 2008 (2009 Accord) to now ('11 G37x). You can actually tell that the sound is being compressed and has no oomph behind it.

I bought my '09 in Nov '09, and turned in on in December. In March '10 I negotiated with them and renewed it for six months for $37.37 ($6.23 per month) after taxes. In Sept '10 I worked out a slightly better deal for four months for $24.54 ($6.13 per month) after taxes. This is pre-paid with the credit card on file.

They will definitely negotiate so don't pay full price. Just sound disinterested and they will make you an offer, but be prepared to pay in full and give them a credit card number.
