Is our keyless entry system safe?

I've recently seen a list of the top 10 stolen cars in Quebec, and the G37 is #3 or 4. One of the reasons stated for this is that some people have figured out how to duplicate the signal given by the key and are then basically able to drive away with the car. According to this, some thieves just walk around parking lots with this device and just hope to get lucky.

I cannot recall where I read this. Is there any truth to it? Would installing an extra security system be a good idea?

INSURANCE BUREAU OF CANADA | IBC releases list of Québec's top 10 stolen vehicles

The top 10 stolen vehicles in Québec are:

1. 2000 Honda Civic SiR 2-door
2. 2003 Volkswagen Golf GTI 2-door Hatchback
3. 1998 Acura Integra 2-door
4. 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4-door 4WD
5. 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi 4-door AWD
6. 1997 Acura Integra 2-door
7. 2006 Toyota Rav4 4-door 4WD
8. 2008 Toyota Highlander 4-door 4WD
9. 1999 Acura Integra 2-door
10. 2007 Toyota Rav4 4-door 4WD

I don't see any G37s on that list.

No it's not true. Back in the early 1990s, yeah you could use code grabbers to get the keyless entry code and MB had an issue with people caputring the IR signal for its keyless entry system but that hasn't been an issue for years.

I don't bother with any extra security system. If someone wants to steal my car that badly, they'll just tow it away, use a flatbed, or find another way.

+1 on that. If they want it, they'll get it. Thats what insurance is for. Be happy you arent IN the car if they do steal it, it can be a whole lot worse....cars and "stuff" can be replaced.

My dad has had convertibles for the past few years, he says he parks them with the top down and nothing in the car. They all have transponder systems so its almost impossible to start them without the key, but leaving the top down prevents them from cutting the top to find nothing in the car.

Not really the point of the thread.. but different lists with different sources will list different cars.

it's #5 in the US according to CNN Money: America's most stolen cars - Infiniti G37 Coupe (5) - CNNMoney.com

#3 here: Cadillac Escalade Ranks #1 In Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles List | Automotive Addicts

etc

Your list is based on overall losses (in $), the other one is based on number of vehicles. Since the G is expensive, it's not surprising to see it in the Top 10 since claim amounts are likely to be high.

I think it makes the list because of things that are stolen from the G37. For example the the G37's wheels are in high demand. A lot of G37 owners including myself have had the wheels stolen from the car. My insurance paid over $6500 to replace the wheels and repaint both right and left rocker panels due to some scratches. When buying new wheels you have to pay for every part on the wheel which includes the center caps, TPMS sensors, Lug Nuts, Tires and TPMS hardware. Not too mention the mounting and balance fees, alignment, and the reprogramming of the TPMS sensors. So even though the entire car is not being stolen, the fact that something from the car is being reported as stolen and has had some damage is reason for making the top of the list. I'm glad I had insurance because forking over $6500 would have been nasty. Like someone else said, if they want your car badly, it will be gone in 60 seconds.
