If you have an eBay account you can list the car with the VIN then go to the listing and you should see the autocheck on it. After your satisfaction delete the ad and good to go.
Make sure to list as auction for 0.99 cent with no reserve. That's free listing.
Hope that helps you out because I do that on all cars I buy. Saved me from buying a totalled and rebuilt G37 few months ago.

Does this work for a local listing, or only national?

With what you describe, no reserve and all, if someone bids on the car you list (even if you somehow cancel the auction within minutes it's possible, especially a national listing) aren't you on the hook to produce the car (and it may not even be your car)?

Just list your car for an obscene amount.

Won't it cost more then to do the listing?

Lot of work to save a few bucks though.

a little off topic, but i feel obligated to say this: carfax is JUNK! i've seen plenty of owners not disclose previous damages (ie frame damages) to potential/new owners, not shown on carfax.
