Weird Sound Under Car This Morning??
so today i was coming home from the store and pulled into the garage to put my car away and all of a sudden pulling into the spot i hear what sounded like a piece of metal was dragging under my car across the ground. I was like what is this maybe something is stuck to my car. so i get out and look and nothing was dragging or under the car. i put it in reverse and i hear the sound again then it goes away. i have not had a single issue with this car and got it in dec 09. I have not heard the noise since and i have drove around for an hour doing some things and checking to see if i could hear it. what could it of been? it sorta gets me worried because its a new car and not one thing has gone wrong yet. any advice? thanks!

Could be your brakes.. ?? Just bought my car used, and I consistently hear a LOUD squeal from the brakes when I'm reversing into a parking spot.. especially when the spot is on a slight slant backwards. Everyday I park at work I hear it.
When the dealer did a multi-point inspection he said the brakes were in great shape. When I told him about the sound he said it may be normal in reverse, but he said any other squeaking after the brakes have warmed up is abnormal.

na i mean i dont think it was the brakes at all. it just doesn't made sense to me because the car has been flawless and the sound stopped after 20 seconds of hearing it. but i checked the ground and under the car and nothing was dragging or hanging down ect... it just worries me. how could u hear a metal dragging noise if everything you checked seemed normal?

Yeah that doesn't make sense. These cars make weird squeaks and noises, which I've learned over the past few weeks. If it's recurring then I would take it a dealer. Ultimately, if you've taken care of the car and can't link the noise to anything you've done then it's covered under the warranty anyway so you should be all good.

the only thing i could think of is this. i was pulling into and old garage and when i started to hear the sound the garage door was going down and maybe it was the noise of the chains on the garage door pulling down mistaking it for the car but it sounds crazy to think that way. it just doesn't make sense because i have not heard a single thing up to this point since purchasing it.

Or it could have been something that got caught underneath and dragged along for a short while, but fell off and no longer is scraping under your car. Weird stuff like that happens all the time.

it was just the craziest noise. i have been driving around all day and haven't heard it again. i checked the garage where i was and nothing was under or behind the car. should i be worried still?

sounded like directly in the middle underneath the car. it only happened for 10 secs about thats why i dont know if it was the car or something else. what did the sound it made sound like to you? what year is your car?

an 09 x sedan. sounded like something, either plastic or metal, was dragging on the road- definitely a scraping sound. seemed to come from just to the right of the center console. lasted anywhere from 3-10 seconds. also, it had been raining the two days i heard it, the roads were pretty wet.

Did it sound like metal scraping metal?? I had that happen to me twice before and it was because there's a lot of little pebbles in the alley to my garage and according to the dealership, they said that these small pebbles sometimes get inbetween the "brake rotars"? and that's the sound I hear. They removed it and I never hear it again. I also drive super slow down the alley now to avoid getting any kind of pebbles to kick up and get stuck again. I forget exactly what he said, but this sounds similar! I would ask the dealership to look for something stuck in the brakes.

The rock and rotor sounds like a plausible explanation. I had the same occur once on our previous G35. The fact that you reversed and it went away gives one the impression that you dislodged the rock with reverse rotation.

its funny you say that because it had been raining for 3 r 4 days previous to when i heard the sound. I have not heard it since and i am thinking there could be a pebble or rock stuck in the brakes like the last two guys said. what do u think?
