Gas Milage in D vs. DS mode
I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to do an experiment to see how much difference there is in gas milage between D and DS driving modes, assuming a similar style of driving in suburbia? I think that most of the time the CPU does a better job of managing shifts in DS, even if not driving aggressively, but haven't had a chance to do a gas mileage experiment.

I would think the gas mileage might differ by about 5-10 mpg? the most severe.
DS mode does hold the RPM longer and places the engine at a more active state than D mode when driven. I could be wrong, someone can correct me.

The difference is definitely much bigger in the city compare to highway driving. I usually get around 220 miles from full to half tank, with DS mode on and off, I get about 170-190.
On a side note, the DS mode is useless with highway cruising but it's so good when you want to have fun.

DS is the same as D most of the time unless you are driving aggressively. Yes, it is possible to get to overdrive in DS mode. Think of it this way DS “allows” the transmission to shift up or down at higher RPMs but only when needed.
The answer to your question … D and DS give equal mileage if NOT driving aggressively. DS will give worse mileage when driving aggressively.
