hissing sound at highway speeds

I'm getting a hissing sound from the rear of the car when i cruise at 60+. Does anybody else have this?

I dont recall hearing the noise when i first purchased the car in April. Is there something the tint shop might have done to cause this when they put on my tint ? I was thinking if they have to remove the rear window when they add tint too it then maybe they caused this.

I cant pinpoint when the sound started since i dont drive on the highway often. i did drive on the highway when i took the car home from the dealer the 1st day and i did not notice this.

Not sure if I have the same thing but someone mentioned that they had the rear 'fixed' portion of their window replaced on the rear passenger door.

I have that same problem (I've been calling it a 'whistle' but I it's just wind noise coming in from somehwere and 'hiss' would explain it too).

I had a pickup/dropoff for service the other day and asked the driver to listen for it but he was 'older and hearing isn't so great' so he couldn't confirm it (or wouldn't . . . ).

Anyway - I got the 'could not duplicate' from the service department but it is definitely consistent over 50-55+mph all of the time - 100%.

It has to be the rear passenger window or the fixed window portion just behind the window that moves.

Either way - it is VERY annoying and I want it fixed!!!

Not sure that helps you at all but maybe you can have someone else drive the car and you can sit back there and listen for it to confirm. I haven't done that yet but I'm pretty sure that's the issue.

Please post back whatever you find out!

Jay

/\ thanks, yea sounds like what you describe is the same thing. i would describe it as a whistler too. pretty faint but annoying. I will ask my daughter to listen for it back there next time we are on the highway.

Have you tried rolling down all the windows and closing them again? Maybe one of the windows isn't completely sealed.
I traded a Jeep GC for my 2010 sedan. You could hear that the doors or windows on the Jeep weren't sealed that well anymore, when you were at highway speeds.
When I was driving the new G home from Sarasota, about 45 miles of I-75, at 80 mph, I could hear wind noise that seemed to be coming from the rear.
This was really annoying since I was expecting a nice quiet ride after trading in the noisy Jeep.
That was 4 months and 6,000 miles ago. I haven't heard any wind noise since the day I drove it home from the dealer and I have been on a 4,000 mile highway trip with the G.

Yup, did the open close thing a few times. The only thing I haven't done is to look in the felt track around the window to see if maybe there isn't something lodged in there or that there isn't an issue with something being bent or visible that might let the wind noise in.

OP - if you do a search, I think you can pretty easily find that post about the owner who got the rear section replaced. I don't have time right now but it might be good to PM him and see what's what.

Thanks!

I had a problem with wind noises when driving on the freeway, or driving above 50MPH. Seems like your problem is very similar to mine. If you would like, try take a look at your door's rubber linings. A portion of it may be loose or not glued properly. That's what the problem was on my car and the dealership replaced the whole lining instead of gluing that specific area. If your dealership kept claiming they can not duplicate the problem, try pressing down on the rubber lining part before hand and see which area does not fit the door well and show them at the dealership. (That's what I did before they test drive it, so they have no excuses)

Hope this helps =)

Wind noise

Well, at least we know we're not crazy......I have had this car for a week and drive 70+mph (all highway commute). I slowed and still heard it at 50+mph. I tried the window thing and that did not help, but like you guys, can't pinpoint it. It is coming from somewhere in the rear....nonetheless it is VERY annoying. I will check the rubber door moldings. If anyone figures it out, that would be terrific!! I too was looking forward to a "quiet" drive after trading in my 05' S4 !!!

i asked my daughter to look around for it back there while we were driving. she could not pin point it. it seems like i do hear it at slower speeds say around 50 so we are most likely having the same issue in common here. i thought it was something maybe the tint people caused doesnt seem like this is the case. i will have to get back there while my wife drives one of these days to check it out, or just have the service manager at the dealer sit back there so i can demonstrate.

I think I pinpointed the issue. (sorry no snake )

It looks like ther rubber gasket around the inside of the door has an area that is not connected in a certain spot. If I look at the other door (driver side) the gasket is pretty well sealed. It looks like there is a spot where the 'tape' isn't affixed very well.

Someone else in another thread mentioned this was their issue and the dealer replaced the whole gasket/seal.

Next vist I'm going to show them the issue and have them replace that.

Hope that helps someone else.

I just purchased a new G37x and have the same problem. The noise is clearly coming from the fixed portion of the right rear window. That window moves around in its mount. I place tape over the top of the seal on the outside of the window and that solved the problem. I will ask the dealer to replace the seal. If I have any problems, I will apply silicone sealant inside the seal.
