Smell from Engine Compartment During Break-in
Just bought a G37 Sedan yesterday. Premium, navi, with the wheel package. I've put about 130 miles on it. My question is...did any of you guys notice a strange odor coming from the engine area during break-in. I don't want to describe it as a burning smell but it kinda is. It might be the brakes but not sure. I could smell it in the car after stopping at a stoplignt and then outside the car when I parked it. I suspect some of you would have smelled it if all of the new G37s do this. What do you think?

I appreciate the quick replies. The oil/WD40 description is good. It smells like burnt off WD40. Sorry Hispeed for not putting my transmission in the description above. It's an automatic.

I noticed the smell on my way home after taking delivery at the dealer. I drove back to the dealer next day. The tech told me it is normal. There is a coating of some kind under the car...whatever...the smell was gone after more driving.
If you continue to get the smell after driving say 100 miles, bring it back to the dealer to have them check it out.

I had that too.... More so than in other new cars that i recall. But after a few hundred miles, the smell is gone. Some sort of oil based coating I think. Probably related to the new VVEL engine. i just learned there is no more throttle body. Now I know why I feel some hesitation when braking and then hitting the gas immediately. Progess and Change is NOT always Good Thing. Engineers think so, but consumers usually find out otherwise sometimes: Take the new iphone from Apple for instance..... Jobs told the public: "You are Holding the Phone incorrectly" WHAT???? Now they have admitted to a engineering problem with the internal antenna. But that's for a different forum discussion... Happy Motoring in your new G.

That smell is the cosmoline (spelling?) type coating that is spayed on the drive line components to protect from corrosion during shipping. Remember, our cars are shipped to the states by boat and sit at port for a while. You would not want a new rusty G would ya? Even though the dealer Pdi's the car before delivery, They can't get it all off. It will dissipate over time. Just drive it like you stole it and enjoy!
