Sell car or put it into storage?
OK, here is my dilemma. I have a '09 Infiniti G37 paid off. I plan I buying a new car next year when I return from the desert. I can get about 25k for the car now. The government will put my car in storage for free during my deployment...BUT...I have to get it up to Dallas (from San Antonio). It is beginning to be crunch time and I can hardly afford to take a day off to get it up there. I can hire a company for $350 to get it up there to the storage unit.
Any opinions? As I mentioned I plan on getting a new car when I get back but am unsure if I should just sell the car now or trade it in when I get back. I also own a 2001 Ford Explorer so I can still get around.

Sell the car of course, that's a 1 year depreciation you're talking about.. the money you make out of selling it won't depreciate lol

should have mentioned it is a 6 month deployment (Air Force) so I'll be back in Jan. I've heard you do not pay sales tax on the trade in value. So, I trade the car in for 25k, I would only pays sales tax for the remaining price of the new car. For example...new car cost 40k. My trade in is valued at 25k. I only pay sales tax on 15k. That is one of the bigger reasons why I was thinking on holding on to it.
Does that change any opinions?
Edit:
MBEAR, I do not think I will be doing a private sell. Aside from that my G37 is the sandstone color (not the lakeshore blue I saw you wanted). Sandstone looks good in the shade or at night...but during bright sunlight...not so much. Made a big mistake getting this color (it was very overcast that day) which is one big reason I want a new car when I get back.

In some states when you sell your car privately and purchase another car in a set time frame (45 days in Ark) or buy..then sell your other car...you only pay sales tax on the difference...just like a dealer tradein. Dealers don't care for this.
Good luck on your deployment.

Another vote for "sell it"! If you're getting something else anyway, you'll likely get more money out of a private sale, and it will most definitely be worth more now than it will next year.
Good luck!

I think the car should be sold - No G37 should sit in storage; it should be on the road. If you can't give the car what it needs, sell it to someone who will

If your state has a 7% sale tax, you will have to clear about $1,900 more for the car if you sell it outright versus if you trade it in.
The cars value will drop a lot more then that during your deployment. There is also the cost of the storage, if you have to pay for it.
You will be able to wheel and deal better without a trade-in, when you get back.
Thank you for your service.
Good luck
