I'm loving my month-old '09 G37x w/ premium, but regretting foregoing the nav. (What was I thinking?) So, believe it or not, I'm already thinking about doing a trade next year. Does anyone have any experience in this department? I.e., what could I expect my local dealer to give me in, say, January '11 on an '09 with approximately 10,000 mi.?

A garmin is $150 and will do the trick. Nothing to get upset over.

Some states let you turn the car back in within 30 days if you haven't gone over a set mileage. Otherwise you are going to get burned - several thousand loss at least if you did it today - more in a year's time but with the benefit of a year's use. Integrated nav rocks - I wouldn't have a car without it. My wife on the other hand doesn't care for it above her portable unit.

My guesstimate is 25-26k if you trade in at a Infiniti dealer. You got the car for about 32k, so, the depreciation is about 6.5k.

Edit: I mean 25-26k in late 2010 or Jan. 2011.

if depreciation is really 6 grand, then do not trade it in. Yes factory nav is nice but not worth that kind of loss.

Unfortunately, this sort of buyer’s remorse shows up regularly on these forums. And whereas portable units can provide many features to solve the problem somewhat, the negatives of such units don’t always do the trick.

Shortcomings like no backup camera (without an complex installation), small screens on most models, the “stick on” appearance, no integration features (e.g., mpg graphs) and the need to remove the unit each time the owner parks in a theft prone area become problems onto themselves.

The only solution I can suggest is to purchase a portable unit and use it until you find it financial feasible to eventually replace the car with one that has factory navigation.

the values of the vehicles are tough to estimate with the everchanging economy we are in. The best bet is to keep it for 3 years and the values will not drop as much then.

I think you should look at the value and price you paid for the vehicle and be happy The new portable navs are well worth the money and value.

You can install an aftermarket back up camera into your vehicle if you decide to get one.

when i was looking for my G i wanted every single option other than nav..
there is just no way to justify $4000 for a nav system and backup camera.. i even traveled 3 states just to get my G and i got it just the way i wanted it
there are ways you can integrate a nav system onto your screen for much cheaper and a good 200 dollar gps will far outperform a factory one, let alone if you buy one of the fancy $500-600 systems

Other way is to keep an eye on ebay or other similar for a unit out of a wrecked g37 - I think parts total close to 6k from the dealer but I'd expect the price for a salvaged system to be closer to 2k.

Every once in a while I kick myself for not getting nav, but it's rare. I just have too much fun with the car for me to miss it for the most part but I do understand.

What I'd do, and what I'm planning on doing is waiting untl 2012, I think that's the model year for the next generation if rumors are correct. Wait until November or December 2012 also with hopes the deals will be better then too. Then look at the payoff for my current, see what's on the 2012, and try for a car with nav if I'm not upside down on my trade in and I like the changes done for a 2012. Only minus I suppose is less of a selection if one buys at the end of the year..but well in 2009 I bought in December and found one in the color I liked, so I'll risk it. Just figure I'll need a list of acceptable colors in my head, not just one.

Might be a little better than a suction cup garmin unit - this integrates the rear view camera and nav into the rearview mirror - not a bad idea.

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I suspect I'll go the Garmiin route and maybe explore integrating it into the screen. (I noticed on another thread that someone had done this; it'll undoubtedly require a good auto electronics store, 'cause there's no way I'd attempt it myself.) Regardless, I'm confident that I'll continue to love driving the car, which is what it's all about, anyway. I traded in a Volvo XC70, so this is a huge step up on the fun meter!

Not to be argumentative, but the nav package on the OP’s car for 2010 is only $1,850, not the $4,000 you quoted.

Furthermore, some of this cost can be passed on when the car is eventually sold as nav cars have a higher resale value over non-nav versions. It’s also my sense that all high-end cars like Infiniti will soon have navigation as standard equipment, making the resale value of non-nav cars even lower in comparison.

You're absolutely correct, but the Navigation Package also does require the Premium Package which will run you about $2900. So close to $5000 total. You can get the the Premium without the Navigation but not vice verse. Regardless, I doubt the factory navigation can compare to the best aftermarket system, which cant be more expensive than $600 as far as I know. Still far below the $1850 paid for the factory one.

And actually navigation system tend to not affect the cars resale value or even lower it because the dealers charge and arm and a leg for the simple DVD upgrade that comes out every few years. The DVD upgrade for my dad's Armada is $800 from Nissan..

Although the car is still great without the Prem Package, I've seen very very few cars without it.

And in my opinion, an Infiniti without Prem is really not an Infiniti...
