G37 manual says cannot use cigarette lighter to power accessories?

This sounds like an odd question...

I just purchased a new 2009 g37x sedan this weekend. I noticed in the manual that it says to not use the cigarette lighter port as an accessory outlet. Is this a real problem, or are they just being overly paranoid?

If I'm not suppose dot use it, that means I only have the single outlet in the center console, whihc seems quite restrictive, as I can only use or charge one device at a time...

I have used it for my radar detector as well as my phone charger. Never had any problems. I think they are just being overly paranoid.

Power

Why not just use the power jack in the center console?

I picked up 2010 0n friday, and was going over a few items with the maint. tech and he watched me install my radar dectector in the front cig. holder and said nothing. My manual does say the same as yours. Overly paranoid.

hmm I wonder why... I mean it's a 12v port... the center console one is a little hard to get to as the driver...

but that would sort of explain why my usb charger didn't work.. (although my 08 did)

This power outlet is not designed
for use with a cigarette lighter unit.

I think you guys are reading it wrong. The power outlet can not be used with a cigaretter lighter.

the next page man.

"The cigarette lighter socket is a power
source for the cigarette lighter element only.
The use of the cigarette lighter socket as a
power source for any other accessory is not
recommended."

it's probably not designed as a constant draw. where as the power socket is. I'd have to check the wiring diagram.

Hmm this is bizarre. On my 08 Coupe, I've been using the cigarette lighter port for my radar since day 1, with no problems. I wonder why they would recommend/say this? I sure as hell would not want the cord from my radar to go to be center console. That would be ridiculous. It would get in the way, look fugly, and probably require to stretch the cord out!

I was actually looking at my 370z manual, thought the z and g would be the same. I guess nissan fixed the issue for the 2010 cars

I would like to be able to plug my GPS into the cigarette lighter, while using the center console to charge my cell phone or ipod or whatever. Of course, the ipod integraiton doesn't charge my ipod touch 2nd gen, so I am in a tad of a bind. If folks with 08/09 models are using it for that purpose with no issue, then cool. Seemed really strange to have such a restriction. I was concerned maybe that meant they didn't gurantee 12v on the port or something.

actually, the iphone/ipod touch doesn't not work with a lot chargers (at home/car chargers alike). There's some weird requirement on the device that prevents it from being charged from certain sources. car ones esp. I think there's only 1-2 griffin cables that's rated for the iphone. but the g's ipod integrated port does not charge the device as it would on the older ipods

I think I read somewhere in the Coupe forum saying that the cigarette lighter does not always produce stable/constant electric current (Ampere) so it might destroy your device or cause fire and Nissan would not be responsible. I doubt it'd happen.

I've been using it for my phone charger. The center console charger is for my ipod. Wonder if there is any other charger in the car that I don't know about lol

I've used the lighter socket with a Garmin GPS several times now without any issues.
