G37X Gas Mileage
#31
Okay - here it is.
At about 4:30 pm, I started the car and did a 20 minute warm up drive. Then I went to a level section of I-80, brought the car up to 80 mph turned on the cruise control and reset the mpg/mph screen on the drivers console.
Numbers took about a minute to reappear. They read 79.5 mph and 26.8 mpg.
I drove for 30 miles. Virtually flat. Out and back drive with very little wind. Temperature 24 degrees F. Very light traffic, only had to pass three semis.
At the end of my 30 miles the readings were 23.8 mpg and 78.9 mph. Even a one half block turn around with only on stop sign dropped the mph to 76 before it started to climb again. However, time wise this was probably less than 4-5 minutes. Stayed easy on the gas getting back up to 80 mph and turned on the cruise control again.
Since I warmed up the car very well, I doubt temperature had much effect on the mpg. I assume that the high altitude has some effect but very difficult to estimate.
So I failed miserably to achieve 30 mpg at 80 mph. I would have tired 85 but WHP frowns on that.
So FWIW, there it is.

So I take it driving a bit faster didn't help you MPG?

I'm still breaking in my G37x sedan. So far, I averaged 17.5-18.5 MPG 80% in town driving. I calculated it on paper, because the on-board computer seems to give 2-3 miles less to a gallon than the real MPG is. As you can imagine, no hard acceleration during the break-in period - can't wait to pass 1200 mark! Also, I noticed that when the on-board computer said that I had -- miles (0) left to empty, I pulled to the nearest gas station, filled the car up and it turned out that the car still had about 2.5 gal of gas in it. Has someone experienced that or my gas gauge is off?

^^I believe there was a thread about this earlier and the consensus was that the "miles to go" readout (or what ever the actual name is) should only be used a general guide. Depending on a whole host of variables, it can be pretty close or way off.

I'm still breaking mine in as well, although with the roads around here there are often small windows to merge, so hard acceleration happens from time to time (and my-oh-my does this thing haul). I'm averaging about 18mpg with 75% local / 25% highway split. Last tank the on-board computer calculated 17.8 mpg, but my calculation came to 18.4 mpg. Not sure why there's a discrepancy.
As for the 0 "miles to go" readout; it seems to reach 0 with between 2.5 and 3 gallons in the tank...a nice buffer, if you ask me. Consider it an anti-procrastination feature )

It's not a hybrid, so I don't aim to get great mpgs. But today I drove on the highway for the first time since picking up my car 10 days ago. I got her up to 65 and set the cruise control, reset my mpg tracker, and averaged 31.2 for 23 mins. I didn't touch the gas or brake pedal once, I tap the up or down button to make minor changes. I was pretty shocked by the number. All of that said, a few cars passed me, and it took a lot to not "go and play". But if you can stay disciplined, you can get respectable mileage. Just have to use the cruise control.
After reading above, that 85 may be the sweet spot, I'll give that a try.
Around town I get 17-19.
