Hi, I am cross shopping the 5 series. Actually, a used 535i or 528i, which can be had for <40k. Supposedly, it has the same interior volume as the G37 sedan. Can this be right? I see legroom is different: 5 series has 1.5" more rear legroom. I am assuming shoulder room is greater in 5 series, but not sure as I could not find any info. I am curious about this because I'll be sticking 2 car seats in the backseat, so the more room the better. Can anybody comment?

OP, front and rear seat leg room is IMHO, one measurement. As you move the front seat, one number gains what the other gives. For average size adults, I think the cars are fine. BMW also has the 7 series "L" if you need more space?
In my search for a car, I looked very closely at the 5 series also. I think BMW's are sometimes unfairly judged as far as repair rates, value and stereotypes. I believe real world comparisons can make them a reasonable choice and CPO prices give them an advantage over CPO G's from what I've seen.
I also found the BMW groups, the "Whispering Bomb", and "Roundel" magazines, hangouts for some true BMW experts that were very friendly and helpful. Which ever car you chose, I know you'll enjoy the ride.

The G is closer in size to the 5 series even though it usually compared to the 3. Infiniti would have to make a version of the Sentra to compare to the 3 series.

I've had two carseats in my back seat with no problem. Not sure how much difference an inch is going to make one way or the other. You'd be better off just test driving and see which you like better.

For the same price though, I would rather have a new G than a used BMW.

Very true, I looked at all 3 and indeed, that is why I am here.........

Used 3 or 5 or new G. The G is much closer to the 5 as far as interior room. I would take the car seats and put them in both and then decide.

have you considered the service issues w/ a preowned BMW versus the reliability of the G? The resale values aren't that spectacular on the BMW's

if the bmw is certifed and has free maintanance for 4 years I would consider it but only if i was buying to start with. I prefer to pay a little more and lease.

I have 2 cars seats in there with no issue, but if you have the rear facing ones - for infants less then a year. You might have to push the seat up a littleb bit, but this was true in the other mid-sized sedans I have had.

Thanks everyone for responding. The BMW is bigger, but not by much. I was so surprised, hence the post.

I will have 2 car seats, one forward facing as of mid NOV. In my heart, I am leaning towards the BMW. It's a sexy machine. However, we don't lease cars, so with practicality in mind a new G seems to be the better choice.

Luckily, my clunker is still running so I have time to spare to check out the 2010 G in January, or whenever it becomes available.
