1st gear redline
Hello,
Today while I was at a stoplight, I had put the car to manual mode, but I had thought it was in DS mode.
So I ended up accelerating hard in 1st gear, all the way to the redline thinking that the car would automatically shift, but when I realized it didn't, it was too late.
Wondering if this is really bad for the car?
My car is a 2009 G37x Sport model, 7 speed automatic.
Any thoughts?

Its probably not good for the car, but I'm not an expert so I'm not gonna comment on that.
But one thing I will say, is that when I put the car in DS mode, sometimes I also go into 1st gear, and it doesn't shift up, and either i have to shift it, or just put it back into D.
You just have to be really careful when going into DS mode, and no push up or down when going from D-DS, since the paddles aren't the only way to shift the car.

I know this isn't my thread/question... but are you actually serious? My G37 is my first car, and I don't know much about driving in that aspect. I thought the redline meant that the engine was working too hard and it would overheat or something.

If he only redlined it once for a few seconds, it's fine. Of course you don't want to lock it into first and drive around town all day with the car redlined, that would be bad. But for a few seconds one time won't be a problem. I think most of us have redlined a car accidentally a few times. Getting it to redline is the fun part.

This is not my first car, it's my 2nd.
My first car was a base 106 hp civic, so I never really drove it aggressively. Definitely never past redline.
I think I can almost swear that I put it into DS (didn't work the paddle shifters, and didn't pull the shift lever down).
It just held in 1st gear till past redline. I know my car is 'fine', but my question is really how bad is it for the car?
Of course i'll be more careful next time.

Redline FTW
It's certainly not something you do all the time,
but you won't hurt the car.
...just make sure that it's fully up to operating temp before going there.
re: "all the way to the redline thinking that the car would automatically shift"
This is a good thing!
It is manual mode after all.
I hate the way Lexus and others auto up to the next gear.
If you're honkin it through a corner,
the last thing you want is the trany shifting part way through.
Also, you are protected by the rev limiter.
The engine will cut out if you ram it all the way up.
The only guys that need to worry are us 6mt guys...
with the dreaded money shift on a missed downshift.

I had a 76 Trans AM that we used to neutral drop from redline daily , um..wait, that wasn't MY Trans AM...anyway, I had an 85 Maxima that we neutral dropped fro...nope, guess THAT wasn't mine either.. There was that Supra Turbo though...um, also not mine
I have experienced the same thing (thinkin it would shift/not neutral droppin it) with this 7AT though. There is a reason the redline spreads over such a large range...anyone know what the actual limiter is set to (if at all)? I have accidentally been at least halfway through the range when it didn't shift early on...
Was also wonderin, whatever happend to the Yellow caution zone followed by the single large Redline that indicated ABSOLUTE detonation and thrown rods????

its call a rev limiter for a reason...it limiting the revs from getting any higher and therefore protecting you engine.
your car is fine...actually you should do it more often because it is fun
