Hmmm...WOT rattle near 7K rpms.......

Hey guys...I rarely get to get on the gas with my car...plus..i just don't drive crazy. That said, There is a long off ramp that is flat and straight and secluded from other cars etc. I paddle downshifted to 2nd gear at about 4K rpms (30mph?) and went WOT. The pull is NICE. No complaints...but as I neared 7K I SWEAR I heared a metalic type rattling noise. I could be nothing...it could be normal. Any ideas?

A metallic rattling at high RPM? If I didn't know better, I'd say engine detonation. Are you running premium or low-grade gas?

If it is detonation, or even if it just could be, get it checked out pronto. You don't want to risk that at all.

I run Mobil 93 Octane...since new. I have ~6,000 Miles. Car has been babied. Redlined maybe 5 times since new.

Well, you're treating it right, then. I still smell detonation, though. Seriously, take that in. Seen too many accounts (and personally a couple) of engines blown from that very thing.

Let us know what you find, please. If your car is stock, and is suffering from that, then we could all have a problem.

Does it sound like little metal ***** in a coffee can? If so, that sounds like pinging or detonation - could you have gotten some bad gas?

Dunno about bad gas? I might try it again tonight. Might be kind of hard to complain to the dealer that while aproaching 7K rpms i hear something funny. I'll report back later if I go out.

The '37 engine isn't the most refined engine I've been in by far... don't think it was anything bad.. just normal '37 noise

May also be an exhaust rattle.

reminds me of that horrible raspy noise the E46 M3's had when they first came out ... occurred in the higher rpms if I'm not mistaken.

Tried it again tonight...had the window open..went WOT in 2nd from 3K to ~7400rpms....sounded great.

Maybe my keys rattled last friday?

Not worried. BTW: WOW...the VQ37 is no joke!

Ain't that the truth. I'm not sure if I'll ever completely get over being surprised by just how hard this engine pulls. I'm used to big, torquey V8's, but damn! They definitely got this one right!

It is a wonderful motor, but the NVH after 6000 rpms is pretty high. Maybe it's worse on the 6MT. I also notice a strange noise after pushing the clutch pedal down during high rpm shifts. This motor is butter smooth around town and turns into a beast during aggressive driving. It's a little rough, but nothing I can't live with. It just surprised me based on how smooth it is in low rpms.

This may sound crazy but my friend had a very similar problem. He thought there was something loose in his dash because it would rattle at high rpms...usually anything after 5000K. He took me for a ride and I heard it...really thought he had something loose in his dash. We went back to my house to do an oil change and come to find out...he only had 3 qts of oil in his car! Did an oil change and the noise went away. He learned his lesson to check his oil level lol. So check your oil too. Could be something crazy like that.
