Window Tint - cutting trim required?

I got my windows tinted at a pretty well known and professional spot in my area. They are owner operated and have many years of experience.

I got the tints done over the weekend and after I left the place, upon closer inspection, found a some debris in the tint. I called them back and they said they'll re-do that window. No problem.

But the question I have for you guys is in the rear windows (The small ones on the rear doors that do not open), they trimmed some of the fuzzy rubber strip away at the bottom of the glass. He said that for some cars, this is too tight and can't get the tint in there. Did they do that to your car?

No. I've never heard of that or seen that before. There was no "trimming" of anything on my G when they did the tinting. Each piece fit perfectly.

+1

Is the piece that they trimmed noticable?
Can you post a pic?

This sucks.. I'll put pics up later.

Its not that noticeable. I noticed it because they didn't trim it straight on one side.

They're pretty well known in the tri state area to do good work and I had high expectations.

I had my car tinted a couple of weeks ago as well; after letting the tint set and washing my car I started noticing debris/bubbles on the back window and one of the side window. I will be taking my car back to the tint shop.

I have yet to see a perfect tint job; the devil is in the details.

You got screwed. Most tinters now use comptuer cut tint, it is cut exactly to the size for each window for different cars. I receltly did my G37 and my SLK, niether had to have anything trimmed. They never once even used a razor.

Simply take pre cut tint and apply to window.

I wouldn't even let them take apart the door trim, let alone cut weather stripping.

There are tinters out there who slide the film inches below the bottom trim line without even having to remove door panels. They use a putty knife to 'slide' it down. I've seen it done, pretty neat.

They should not be trimming anything for a tint. I hope they didn't take a blade and scratch your windows up.

The way a tint guy explained it to me, this isn't always the best thing. Every car's fit and finish is slightly off, and having a standard cut for all windows won't account for these imperfections. Makes sense, but maybe he was saying this because they didn't do computerized cutting in his shop

Yeah - that was my tinter's line too. He wasnt computerized either but did a damn nice job. I watched the whole process which took about 2 hours - very impressive how these guys are able to mold the film over the small side windows in small spaces with complex curves.

It should not require any trimming of any interior parts. Have had many cars tinted and they never had to trim anything.
