New G37 Owner

Hey guys, just took delivery of my new 2009 G37 Sedan and love it. I wanted to ask a stupid newbie question about my car, however.

This is the first 7-speed transmission I've ever had. I test drove the car all over the place, and really let it fly on the highway before I purchased.

One thing I did not do before I purchased, however, was drive a lot of low speed neighborhood driving.

I'm noticing something about the way the car drives and I wanted to make sure its just how the transmission runs on this car and not something that I need to take a look at. If its the normal drive of the car I'm fine, but if its something else I need to take it to the dealership.

The problem is this: When I drive in city at lower speeds, the auto transmission downshift a little sooner than I'm used to and really slows down the car if my foot isn't on the gas. Its especially noticable when coasting up to a red light or something like that. I suspect is just the sporty transmission allowing for tight cornering in low speeds and it just has that "feel" when you are driving around town, but I wanted to make sure. Is this the way the car is supposed to handle at low speeds?

Are you keeping it in D mode or DS? It should be relatively smooth, but i dont own a 7AT to tell you from personal experience.

congrats on the new car!! I'm sure someone on here can help more.

Yeah, make sure you have it in D and not DS where it will down shift at higher revs when slowing down. I have 5at though so i dont know.

Mine does this. When I take my foot off the gas and coast to a stop for example, rpms jump and it helps me slow down. I always thought it was normal. Im 5At btw.

Its when I'm in "D" mode just driving in Houston street traffic to work. Like coming up to a light or coasting behind someone when we're slowing down.

I think its just the type of transmission. If other people experience this then I'm OK.

I'm more used to driving American muscle cars that just coast to a stop rather than precision imports, so it may just be a difference there.

Supermac - Check out this link; it's a good fit to your question.

http://g35driver.com/forums/g37-seda...ming-stop.html

I picked up my 09 G37S 7AT in late November, and noticed the same thing. The hard downshifts ease up a bit around the break-in period (12-1500 miles or so), but long story short - It's just part of the sporty drive.

I had an 07 G35S 5AT that had a similiar feel, but not as big of downshifts. I think a big part of that is the 2 extra gears.

PS - Congrats on the new ride. This is my 2nd G, and I can't say enough good things.

Picked up the car last Thursday and noticed the same thing in both D and DS. It's just the nature of the car. Probably something to get used to or like the other guy said, it gets better after break-in.

I talked to my salesman and he said that they have noticed this in every 7-speed from 2009 so far. His general manager is taking the issue to Infiniti to make sure that it is supposed to be running this way, but he thinks its just the natur of the car.

If not, they might put out a flash update for it.

Goddamnit... G37S is so nice! I can't wait to break-in the engine, so i can push the limit.
Suspensions are tight and the power is right!
