This is no absolutely no comparison between FWD and RWD.
Different discussion altogether-

FWD will run circles around RWD any day of the week on snow and ice and off roading-

I had a 1974 Subaru that was one of the best off road cars you'd ever want to see.
Of course, I was a lot younger and wilder, then.
I had a 1983 Renault Alliance that was pretty damn good in the woods, too.
I've also had 3 Jeeps with which I've done significant off roading.

Different world up here in the UP than down there...

AWD + studded tires > AWD + snow tires > FWD + snow tires > RWD + snow tires > AWD + all-season tires > FWD + all season tires

RWD + all-season tires shouldn't even be CONSIDERED for snow driving, let alone anything with summer tires.

I tried going up to mountain high once in my STI with RE01R and I turned right back around and got the Corolla.

moutain high isn't very high up. It's a local so-cal ski resort. I turned around cuz the road was too cold and the tires had no grip.

RE01R is a 40 degree + only tire.

you're allowed to have studded tires??

over here, it's banned because our roads are soo crap that studs would just destroy it even more.

wait til spring time, i'll post pics of the pot-holes. I gotta dig up my thread about the pot-hole watch team for Montreal. it's a site about finding pot-holes and the city fixes them asap

Studded tires are banned in California, but I've had the opportunity to sit in one before...

The only thing I don't miss from Montreal are the crappy roads and the pot-holes the size of chickens that took 11 city workers to fill in 3 days per hole!
