Sounds like a module is locking up and need to be reset, so when you do the battery trick it resets and starts. Really you need to have it scanned to see if any modules are setting codes, because otherwise it’s a guessing game. There is a common issue with our cars that is the steering lock, if you can get you car to work, simply remove the fuse for the steering lock (under hood fuse box) and see if that works, but you need to do it once the steering is unlocked-key on, or it won’t stay unlocked. Hope that helps, and let us know.

gotcha so there is a module that locks the steering wheel? If I unplug the neg and reconnect the car starts every time.

which fuse?

It’s labelled steering lock. As stated I’m thinking the module is locking up and not unlocking the wheel when it does, so if you have the key on and the wheel unlocked, the wheel will stay unlocked and you may have solved the issue. It’s a free fix if it works, so it’s well worth the effort. Just remember to make sure the key is on before pulling the fuse, or the wheel will stay locked and it will never start.

Just completed!

never knew this was an issue with G’s. While I was doing it I do remember seeing when I tried starting the car before when pressing the start button it never went/lit orange to “lock”, just acc and on

ill drive for a week and see how it does! Feels like this could be my fix. Thank you!

A washer on the B-terminal of the starter motor can corrode/rust overtime, cause a short and cause wacky intermittent start issues. Either new washer, or just sand the corrosion off.

When this "gremlin" rears its head, is the car completely dead? ie, does anything on the car that would normally work with the car OFF (ie. clock, map lights, emergency flashers, etc.) function or must you fiddle with the battery everytime to get back to normal?

Need some clarity on your symptoms.

when the start button is on… the flasher do not work, the radio hvac power locks map lights all do not work.

when start button is set to off…. The power locks, windows radio and hvac still do not work.

in the past if we disconnected the ground of the battery and the car would fire up after 10-15 mins.

The last time we got it started I removed the steering lock fuse right away. Hopeful it was that, I drove the car around for a month until this Christmas day were it left me stranded at the bank. This time removing the ground did not help…. It was totally dead and had to be towed to the shop.

the only thing that seems to actually work in on position is the fuel pump (hear it prime) and the phone charger (cigarette lighter)

I had this problem and it was the BCM getting wet. (the sunroof drains down there for some reason and ruins everything. lol)
Pull up the carpet on the passenger side and see if you have a buncha water in the ground. If so, dry everything out and toss some damp-rid in there.

Mine doesnt have a hardtop...but I do run my boost gage cable thru the hole, ill check it for sure for dampness... It is garage kept constantly and never sees rain or snow, but who knows! Worth a check at this point

For the positive battery cable to "melt" indicates something was/is pulling too much current. This is NOT normal.

Hopefully your issue is finally resolved, but I would definitely recommend keeping a eye on the cables / battery.

I went through this issue myself. I had pulled the steering lock fuse and running a NATS deleted ECM.
Starting the car one day had the same issue orange key light, threw me off since the last time I had seen this light was with the steering lock.
Ended up being the positive terminal fuses, from a corroded terminal.

I suggest you pay good attention to this bulky terminal and make sure your battery ground is good.
A new terminal and a good look at this fuse junction should set you straight.
