What rpm to shift at?
Hey so I recently learned how to drive a manual like 4 months now, I’m pretty good at it and can switch gears faster than Subaru owners on their way to a vape shop on a Sunday morning. Anyways I see all these car vids where guys are shifting at like 7k rpm or redline however when I try to get to a high rpm like that, the car just sounds like it’s gasping for air. Like it sounds mean and angry up to 5k rpm after that it just sounds scary and like something is about to blow out. So just wondering if that’s just how they are. Btw it’s ‘14 Q60s coupe (or ‘14 g37 if you’re one of those guys)

Given you're new to the car, and you're 22, and the car is at least 4 years old because of the 6MT on the Q60 (G37 Coupe)... by any chance is there an aftermarket intake on the car? At high revs, aftermarket intakes will make a guttural howl that will wake the dead.

Did you purchase the car like that? I'm guessing you did, and are a little freaked out by the intake noise at the high revs compared to what you're used to.
Insofar as when you should be shifting... it depends on how you're driving in the moment. Shifting around 3-4k is normal, casual driving. Shifting north of 5k is aggressive, and shifting at redline is WOT. Go up to the red line, and the car's rev limiter is going to slap you back, or you're going to miss-shift the next gear, or both.

Short rear gears and a loud exhaust get me in the moment so much more than it used to. Probably why I sometimes complain that my car is exhausting (no pun).

I have Stillen Gen 3's as well. 3-4k for normal driving. Maybe 6k if I'm being spirited, but not pushing it. I've never heard any sounds that concerned me. The engine opens up around 5k, so everything will sound more intense. If you want you can post a video if the sound.
