20% compared to 35% is quite different. In most states, it's the difference from legal to illegal. I personally finds 20% tint to be noticeably darker then 35% from my experience. It's odd that they wouldn't test your window for you and tell you what the exact percentage you were being cited for to compare to your local laws. It's sort of like being cited for speeding without radar/laser data.
I agree, they should have rolled your window down a bit and tested it. Otherwise, its just his word against yours at the fine window.

I'm in SoCal and have had 30% tint for years without any issues. Maybe it was just your luck or the CHP had nothing better to do.

It's Illegal to not wear a seat belt in any state but my old co-worker had a doctor's not exempting him from wearing it because it would bring on anxiety attacks from being restrained....Confirmed by local county police who frequented the store to be valid.

True as of 2010 and in the Anne Arundel county area of Maryland. I would've asked about insurance if 19 y.o me would've thought about it at the time. Ever since a bad accident when I was 17 I've always worn my seatbelt - it saved my life. My car doesn't move until all occupants are buckled.

This is kinda old but got the same ticket about 6 months ago in the bay area. I thought I had to pay 220$ as well but you can actually just remove the tint, go to your nearest CHP office and have them sign the ticket. This means that they saw you removed the tint. Then take it to your local court house or whecer the ticket needs to be handled at and show them the ticket signed. They will ask for a $25 fee and your good to go.
Funny part is that the CHP officer didn't even come outside to look at my car. Literally told then I got the ticket for tint, removed the tint, and he signed it haha. After I paid the 25$ t the court house, a week later, I re-tinted my front windows

But yeah for me, it costs me $160 to tint all 5 windows and is free to remove only the front 2 if I got a ticket. Which I did. So I got it removed for free and paid the 25$ fee at the court house. Than I reinstalled the front window tint for $120. In total I paid about $150 to get the tint removed, fix ticket, and re tint my front windows. Which is cheaper than 220. But yeah, it all depends on how much you pay for tint to decide if it's worth it to remove and pay the 25$ or just keep it on and pay the fine.
