Hill parking with e-brake

Hey guys,

I'm a new owner and was wondering if hill parking with an e-brake should hold my car stationary.

Currently, my car rolls down the hill even with an e-brake on. I have to leave my car in 1st gear with e-brake in my drive way because e-brake in neutral doesn't hold my car in place.

Is this normal? I thought the 1st gear was for emergencies in which my e-brake failed?

Definitely not normal. Probably needs adjusting. Does having your parking brake on give any resistance?

not normal although I would never leave it to ebrake to hold a car in place when parking on a hill..
adjust the ebrake and always throw it in gear when parking.. also turn your wheels towards the curb..

Yes the e-brake does give resistance. Without e-brake, my car would roll down the hill much faster.

yeah, i always leave it in gear + e-brake.

1st gear + e-brake on ascending hills, reverse + e-brake on descending hills.

Okay, so this is not normal. My car should hold it's own with only e-brake on and the gears would come in as backups. So, I should go get this checked out?

How do you get rid of that "Do you know your computer history" spam...?

Do some looking around and there's probably a DIY on here for how to adjust the cable, if not should be fairly easy for a shop to fix up. Under warranty?

If you leave your car in gear and someone bumps into it, wouldn't that shatter your tranny? I've seen idiots who can't parallel park back into a car and "push" it back so they can fit into the space and it's always made me cringe.

I don't think it's a full mechanical cable like older cars. I adjusted mine when I did new rotors. It involves sticking a flathead screwdriver through the little opening in the rear rotors and rotating the "clip" that's in there... That's probably a terrible explanation without pictures, but if you look up DIYs for changing rotors, you should find this step in there and it should make sense.

Like someone already said, if you are parked down a hill, turn your wheels into the curb. If your parked up a hill, turn your wheels away from the curb.

I had the same problem with my e-brake also. I used this thread to adjust it:

It definitely helped but I'm still paranoid so I just park my car in gear where ever I go with the e-brake.
