Water Leaks?

Water Leaks?
Hi, I'm a prospective G37S owner and I drove 7 hours round trip today to look at a 2008 that had a soaking wet passenger foot well rug and mildew stench. I also read another thread about a leaking roof in a G37 coupe. Is this a common problem? Should I give up and by a Miata

Hello, welcome to the forums.
If I were in your place I would look for a different one.. I have a 2011 with no issues of leaking. A few older models that I saw at the time had some issues, including leaking but I eventually found the right one. And Miata's are fun

Well there's a lot of info missing, is it a killer deal or you need a car ASAP?? Since you drove all that way I'm assuming you have cash in hand and ready to buy so I would just get something else or use that problem as a major issue and talk the price down. It's probably just the leaky sunroof hose that has been well documented here that you can easily fix and shampoo and be done. But, what style G are you after? Which features do you want? What's your price point?
I have a Miata in the garage as we speak and are super fun but a totally different style car, hardly comparable to a G.

It's likely the sunroof drains, either leaking at the sunroof end or at the firewall. Happens to the coupes and sedans. I'd use it to knock another $1,000 off the purchase price, but as previously mentioned, you didn't put enough info (miles, price, etc...) in the OP for us to tell you if you should pursue this purchase or move on.

My wife has one in our garage too. I like the simplicity of the Miata and the prospect of turning it into a MX-5 cup car some day
I'm looking for a G37 Sport 6-speed for $20,000 or less so I'm mostly looking at 2008 to 2012's in that price range. Not a big fan of white but any other color is OK. I want less than 80K on the odometer. I'm looking at Cars.com, Autotrader.com and craigslist.

Is there any sort of an a/c condenser drip line in the passenger's footwell? Could that have come loose and caused condensation from the a/c to drip into the footwell over time? I know I managed to do this on my RX7 way back when...
Other than that, I've read a lot of leaking issues coming from the driver's and passenger's windows due to slight misalignment. I have zero issues on my 2013.
Any car with a sunroof can potentially leak due to clogged drain lines too.
I'd try for a 2012 if you can swing it as they don't suffer from the paper gasket/oil pressure issue of earlier cars.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd get a 2013 sedan XS so you'd have the best of everything, minus the brakes, but those can be swapped. Comes with the upgraded resolution nav screen, built in Bluetooth music streaming, metal gaskets, all the Sport features and the sedan is faster to boot.. On top of all that the AWD feature can be deactivated by the flick of a very easily wired in switch so you can keep it in the snow/rain and off when you wanna hoon.. THAT, is the perfect G, to me. Although, the coupe looks better..

In my case, it was the sunroof drain grommet on the firewall that needed to be replaced. Dealership billed for $600+, covered under my warranty.
The blue arrow indicates the location of the grommet. This is the grommet itself:

I have posted about this, Might have same issue I did. The front window was replaced and they didn't secure the weather stripping correct. Water was leaking into the open air intake behind the battery and fell down into the passenger floor through the blower. I replaced the weather stripping where the cowl meets the window and perfect.
Also wait until the seal on the door starts to wear.. you will see water dripping through the tweeters. I replaced the broken plastic tabs with beefier plastic and it made an airtight seal with the window again.
