Exhaust note at low speeds

Hello everyone,

So I have a 2011 g37 coupe. I've noticed that at low speeds and usually only when I accelerate between speeds of 30-40mph, the exhaust note has a nice deep rich tone. It sounds very (for lack of better terms) "bassy".

I actually really like the exhaust note during that speed range. But I wanted to know what is actually going on to make it do that? I notice that the exhaust quickly goes back into its high pitched tones once I pass those speeds.

Thanks for the feedback.

That is the point of exhaust resonation.

If you install an aftermarket exhaust like a Magnaflow, or Stillen, you will get a headache at that point.

The factory exhaust quiets this very well.

What he said^^
That's the "drone-zone" and this can shift in rpm range depending on the exhaust setup but is hard to eliminate. Like TV said, the OEM masks this zone about as good as you can.

So it sounds this resonance is actually an undesirable quality? An aftermarket exhaust would amplify the resonance or mute it? I thought more people liked the deep tone

I love the OEM exhaust note, angry when you need it and not interfering when you don't want it.

Amplify it to the point of nausea.

Had a Magnaflow for exactly 26 miles, dumped it quickly due to resonance.

My Fujitsubo (Same as OEM but bigger pipes) had bigger resonators, but overall deeper sound. Kind of miss it.

My Fast Intentions has minor resonance, but the sound doesnt match the G, more befitting the Z, even though its the same engine!

^^^Why did you get rid of the Fujitsubo if you liked it?

"In retrospect"

The FI sounds great, it sounds a little too high pitched.
It fits a Z, but doesn't sound like it belongs on a G.
Needs to be a deeper tone.

My opinion only.

I like the stock g37 exhaust note too hence why I will not switch to an aftermarket one. The Hks hi-power on my old Rsx annoyed the crap out of me on the high way but it's nice around town. The G has the rich tone and gurgle that excite my inner child not to the point of annoying my passenger.
