Questions on OEM Rear Spoiler Install

Greetings All,

I was hoping some of you who did the OEM rear spoiler (without camera) install for the coupe can help answer a few questions.

First, am I reading the instructions correctly that you need to drill 6 holes (19mm, 2x 18mm, 3x 10mm) on the trunk lid? Are there any holes that don't need to be drilled without sacrificing the security of the spoiler install? Note, I have the spoiler without the camera.

What did you use to drill the 19mm and 18mm holes? A step drill bit? Or a hole saw? It is hard to find a hole saw in 19mm. How critical is it to be exact for the 18mm and 19mm holes as I will probably use a step drill bit in inches and will need to estimate the size for mm.

This is my first post but have communicated with several of you through pm over the years. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this site and for educating me many times over through the process.

I installed my own spoiler and finding a 19mm hole saw was impossible lol. I ended up using a step dril bit that measured from 8-25mm and I drilled until I opened up the holes as needed. This worked out like a charm GL to you, it's very easy with the instructions provided, just take your time and get a step drill bit. Once you begin check to make sure you don't drill more then needed as you go.

^ What he said .... don't remember having to drill 6 holes as I thought you use some of the existing. It's been a while since I did it so I might be wrong. Take your time, special attention to getting the template right. Make sure to use the rust preventative on the newly drilled holes. Measure twice (or more) drill once.

If you don't have a back up camera you don't need to drill the 19mm hole, there should be a hole there already for the camera wiring harness whether your car has one or not. If you use a step bit (which is your best bet anyway) drill the 18mm holes to 11/16," you can wrap tape around the bit at that point so you don't over drill. Use touch up paint on the holes, and like the other posters said take your time and be precise. Good luck!

Diego, 2008G and Roadrash, thank you guys for the quick responses. I appreciate your advice and tips. I've ordered step drill bits and will receive it tomorrow.

After the spoiler, on to new tires for my IPL wheels and possibly a new front bumper.

I just noticed in your signature that your car is the same color as mine, you are going to LOVE the way the spoiler looks. I hated that chrome lip and couldn't wait to get it off of there. Here's a before and after for you

Roadrash, thanks for the preview of what my car will look like in a few days. It looks pretty sweeeeeeet in AG! I love how AG looks like three different colors (graphite, silver/grey, amethyst tint to graphite) depending on the amount of light hitting the car.

Help! I ran into a slight glitch during my install of the spoiler as the instructions are very unclear. The spoiler kit comes with a wire sub-harness where one end connects to where the rear deck brake light connected to and the other end has two wires, one a ground and a terminal end that needs to be connected somewhere. (This sub-harness appears to be a bypass to the rear deck brake connection.) One of the pictures below shows the red wire with the terminal end. Does the terminal end just get inserted into the white wiring (picture below) harness next to the yellow wire? Do I need to undo the harness before inserting the terminal end into the harness? The white harness is located left of the driver's side rear speaker underneath the rear deck.

So far, this is taking more time than I expected for what appeared to be a medium to easy install. The other most challenging thing has been to center the middle template with the large hole.

Thanks guys.

Are you sure you have to use that harness? On my car there was a plug where the harness came through the decklid. All I had to do was plug it in and unplug the original third brake light.

I'm following the instructions for a vehicle without premium grade and technology package. It looks like you have the premium package which appears to be wired differently.

When you unhooked the rear shelf brake light, did you have to connect anything to the other end of the clip that was previously connected to the shelf brake light?

Nope it was all plug and play, when I plugged the spoiler light in they both worked. I just unplugged the original light and double checked the spoiler light. Sorry I couldn't help, good luck.
