Are there specific tools needed to work on this car?

Is there equipment that only Infiniti mechanics would have/need to work on and maintain this car?

Something that a mom and pop mechanics shop wouldn't invest in or just can't get for some reason?

Are you trying to decide if you need to go to the dealer for service..?

You don't...

Not really a dealer
I go to a mom and pop shop and have been going to him for years
I know all of his kids and even bought the car I'm driving now (85 300Z after my 86 got crashed into) with out ever even looking at it.
I just looked around and said I'd take that one (Pointing to the car I have now).

I'll go to any doctor but not any mechanic.

My concerns are that the car may need something to check out the car or to fix it that the average non Infiniti mechanic may not have.

I'd assume the only things you'd have to go to the dealer for would be Software updates (TSB's for transmission, ECU, etc...) and warranty work. Otherwise it's just like any other car.

I've heard not to mess with the VVEL system, believe not even the dealer does and they just replace the whole thing if there's any issues. Not that this normally has any issues.

Another concern of mine is that the mechanics of cars changes soo fast.
An 2011 made in Jan. may be different then a 2011 made in AUG.

I just wonder how small shops can keep up with changes

It sounds like you're trying to talk yourself out of using them. If there's something they need or want to know about the car, why can't they use the internet like everyone else?

Good point but not at all

There's just a lot of cpu things in this car and I just want to make sure nothing crazy happens.

I Know for a fact if my car guy or I should say one of the people that works for him, messes something up more then likely they have the part or can go in the back lot and pull what is needed off a car in the back.

Not so easy with a 2011+

On the other hand, if it's a 2011+ there shouldn't be much if any serious issues that aren't covered by the warranty. Should be simple maintenance for at least 80k miles. Just change the oil/air filters, maybe a diff fluid change/other fluids (except ATF). For the most part these cars are pretty reliable. If and when something goes wrong, you can gauge if your shop will be able to handle the repair or if it's something you feel more comfortable letting the dealer handle.
