Gas Came Back Up

Gas Came Back Up
Strangest thing happened on Friday evening while trying to fill my near-empty tank at the local Shell station.
The attendant put in the pump, everything seemed fine. A couple gallons later, and suddenly the gas starts coming back up from the fill tube onto the pavement. Tried to fill again, and once again it eventually came spurting back up.
I have a feeling this is some stupidly simple fix. Anyone know what's going on here?

Mine does something similar. Rather than overflowing, it will just cut the pump off after a few gallons.
My "fix" is to take the nozzle out and wait a few seconds then continue filling. I also don't fill on "full speed", rather more in the middle. Another thing I have found that sometimes work is to simply reposition the nozzle.

This happens often to me too.. I've wondered what causes this. Usually I'll readjust the pump, or pull it out completely, then try again.. After 1 or 2 tries its usually fine.. I also pump on the slow/middle setting versus the fastest, not sure if that makes a difference..

How helpful of you.
Maybe, my understanding is that when a gas tank is filled, the air inside has to escape to make room for the fuel. Don't most cars have some sort of one-way valve near the tank that allows the air to escape?

not sure what year yours is, but there is a TSB being unable to fill up the gas tank past 1/2 a tank, see if this looks like it might apply to you:

I'm gonna try filling today really slowly and see if anything comes up. May have to break out my ramps and figure out where that air vent is to see if it's clogged. I've noticed that gunk and dirt can accumulate behind the rear wheels in the lips of the rear bumper, perhaps some got into the vent.

Something about the vapor shuts the pump down, can be allot worse if it is a very hot day.
I just pull the nozzle out a bit to allow the vapor to escape, and let up a bit on the flow. Not anything to do with the car for the most part, more of a safety feature of the gas pump.

I always pump 91 octane, assuming the attendant doesn't screw up and I don't catch them screwing up. I pumped about $20 worth of V-Power today at the local Shell station, and on medium flow it went in without issue. I had gone through a touchless carwash the other day and my undercarriage was blasted, so maybe there was just some sort of blockage in the gas tank vent.
