the tanabe axleback's modification concept is the same as the short tails', both are muffler deletes. yet no one complains about the $650+ price tag on the tanabes
the $450 is just the odm's/mfg's msrp price. there's a good chance some vendor (or maybe aam, themselves) will release them at ~$400.

now, you may say that the tanabe puts their own r&d into their stuff and have the extra enlarged portion in the piping (i believe that's the muffling part -not too sure- feel free to correct me) which justifies their price. i would be inclined to say the same for aam and i dont have reason not to. the fact that their quite popular on the 370z forums should say something.

imo, give them a chance. if you could fab a straight piped axleback like theirs, make it sound like theirs, and sell it for cheaper... by all means! im just glad that we have more options especially from companies designing and realize new ideas and concepts

Gonna have to respectfully disagree sir:

"If your looking for a new exhaust for your G37 coupe, but you do not want something loud and obnoxious then this Tanabe exhaust is for you! The Tanabe Medallion Touring exhaust for the G37 coupe is for those who want performance, power and a system that is quality. The system is constructed of SUS304 stainless steel, uses 1.2mm thin wall piping and hollow exhaust hangers for weight reduction. Tanabe uses Advantex muffler packing technology to reduce the exhaust volume to 93db while maintaining efficient flow and a slim line canister for optimum ground clearance. Medallion touring systems satisfy both form and function with the high quality you would only expect from an industry leader like Tanabe."

It's a little more than just a straight pipe with blue tips like what AAM is offering. You could go to any muffler shop and get the same deal done for $200.

to my knowledge, sus304 and t304 are the same type of steel. aam, too, advertises weight reduction, 18 lbs worth.
the only thing i see, like you said & like how i said in my first post, is that tanabes have r&d'ed the muffler section which reduces the noise and creates their own signature sound. that itself can justify the ~$200+ price tag difference, a buyer's opinion. the critism, that the muffler can be easily fab'ed, can be applied to tanabes and it already has been done. it's not anything super special, topspeed was able to replicate that for ~$250 as well (how successful they were is subjective, but that's not the point). also, not having that muffler section to produce a loud aggressive tone was their design choice and part of their advertising point; saying that tanabe's is 93 decibels isn't arguing anything because each company made that design decision themselves.

i'm not trying to take anything away from tanabe; i'm just trying to give aam some credit they deserve for creating, designing, and offering a new product and option to our community. if you can create, replicate, and offer a replica, then by all means... no one is stopping you (maybe aam if they are patent pending lol, i dunno). kudos to aam for being the first to take advantage and monetize this market in the g37 community.

btw, they also offer polished tips not just the 'blue' ones.

Tanabe axle back is an actual muffler. These are straight pipes with a flange on one end and a tip on the other. Big difference. Similar to the difference between buying test pipes and buying HFC. Not the same thing. And prices reflect that.

Agreed.

The AAM is a bit pricey for what it is. And its just an axle back. But it is a cool idea and I'm sure the muffler deletes reduces a good amount of weight too.

Can't put a price on the good sound. IMO the "sound" of your car has a lot to do with your overall enjoyment. For instance, the sound of the mustang GT 5.0 (new one) just makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. For $400 I don't think that's too bad. You can argue that actual mufflers for a similar price would be a better value but at the end of the day it's all about the sound. Especially for a guy like me who just wants to enjoy his ride. If somebody could replicate the sound for less then great, but like others have said, it's nice to have reasonably priced options. Reasonable being something less than a whole exhaust for $3-400 ish, etc. that still sounds cool.

Never understood why people buy mufflers only? Especially at this price point. You can buy an Invidia full exhaust for $700 something. Mufflers give barely any hp gain. Some may argue looks and sound, but is that really worth $500 to sound/look nicer and not be much, if any quicker? Doesn't make sense to me...

For the record, i mis-spoke when i said both were muffler deletes. the tanabes' still have a muffler just in a different form compared to the oem (like i said in my earlier post), BB just reiterated it. short tails are deletes. what i meant to say is that both are similar in the sense that they're muffler mods or in the g37's case, axlebacks. my gripe is that everyone seems so accepting of tanabe's price (while b*tchin' out aam for their's). both manufacturer/odm seems to inflate the price and it's been proven, yet again, that the design can be replicated for less than half the price!
which goes back to the whole imitation v.s. innovation argument.... yes, you can say that there doesn't seem to be much innovation in the short tails, but you'll never know... only the od's truly know.

i'm not trying to justify the aam's pricing, i'm just pointing out the inconsistencies and bandwagoning i saw in this thread (and, to and extent, in this community). for those of you who judged the people who got the top speed (tanabe replica) axleback, i expect you to appear here and flame Ricky. LOL. jk

good for you
now, if the sound is replicated as well as their advertised weight savings, more power to you!
if you can mass-produce it and sell it (if that is your desire), most power to you!
