Adhering to the break in schedule
Got a quick question for you guys with superior car knowledge than I. I have a 2012 G37 IPL and have been having a lot of fun with it since I got it. Was flipping through the manual and came across a section called the break in schedule. It cautions drivers to avoid four methods of driving before reaching 1200 miles.
1. Avoid driving for long periods at constant speed either fast or slow. Do not run the engine over 4000 rpm
2. Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear
3. Avoid quick starts
4. Avoid hard braking.
I only have 300 miles on the car and have already done all these things. Should I be worried at all?
Thanks in advance for all the advice.

If it's a lease, go crazy. If you bought it, follow the owner's manual. When I hit the high rpms, my car smells like it is burning up. Lot of friction on a new motor. I have 1000 mi & plan on bringing the rpms up a few times to enjoy what I bought.

Lease or own, I would drive it the same, I always break it in correctly, My first LOF is at 750 miles. If it a lease you may not have it in 4-5 years but you are still in it for the next 3, Why risk any issues at all? An at the end if you want to buy it you will worry about it cause you beat the crap out of it. Beat it turn it in and there will be someone on here after with thread "2011 IPL off lease CPO purchse and motor just blew up, Help".. Most people could give two shats about who gets a car after them I'm not just one of those people. take care of it while you have it , Just my .02.

I don't think he was trying to abuse it, just seems like he didn't realize there was a break in process. I'd try and take it easy for the first 1200 miles, then have fun. OP you probably didn't hurt anything, even if you did there's nothing that can be done now.
I agree with you ANMVQ, lease or own, don't tear it up because you can't wait a few weeks to properly break it in. There will be plenty of time to enjoy it. Unfortunately not everyone thinks this way, one of the many reasons why I picked mine up new and decided not to go with the used 335i.
