Bumper damage. Need repair advise!

Well what do you guys think? Can it be repaired or does the enitre bumper have to be replaced for such little damage? Some kid in his C230 didnt stop in time and his license plate did the rest.

Its hard to see exactly whats going on in the picture. Looks like an indent from a bolt on the far left, then the 2 lines to the right are sticking out? The ABS plastic is really amazing with working with when you use heat. That far right circular mark probably wont come out much, but the others to the right you should be able to make look pretty decent with a torch, heat gun, and a 2x4 block and some other tools. It becomes pretty malleable with some heat, just don't go too crazy. It may not be 100% however, which personally would bother me.

If you got rear ended why not ask the kid in the Benz to pay for it?

Thats what I was thinking. But he could always get a check from the insurance company and pocket that if he is actually able to fix the damage himself. If it doesn't work out he could always get it fixed or try to scoop up an IPL rear. Thats what I would do lol.

I agree with TwoThree...its a little hard to see. Any different angles?

I say take a heat gun, apply some heat, and see if you can play with it and fix it.

What a coincidence! I also got rear-ended a few days ago and the damage is very similar--the license plate from the other car did most of the damage. Got an estimate from two body shops and they both said to replace it (its a pain to repair and repaint plus the damage might show up later). Heres a pic:

You know I was tempted to take care of it right there and then but I stopped myself because I didnt know exactly what it would cost to fix. He offered to give me cash to settle it but I said you have insurance so we are going to let them take care of it. Now I wait to see what they will say. How much do you think they will say to fix?

YO! You gotta hit that body shop, boss! There's some things that can't be settled on a forum. We can SEE it, but we can't push it in and see if we hear loose parts or broken parts underneath.

Take it to a few shops and get some estimates...at least 3 with one being REALLY high. Use that as the basis and then go to the less expensive one if they give you the cash. But when it comes to auto-body damage, don't leave that up to amateurs. It can come back later to bite you.

Good luck.

Bumper, paint and labor.........~$900.00. Been there, done that!

Try to get a factory painted bumper, body shops have a hard time with orange peel when painting bumpers.

wo thats scary...my bumper got rear ended a few months back and it looks EXACTLY like that except my car is black. A really good body shop appraised it for 900 bucks so the guy that hit me paid for it for 900. Then i found places that said they can fix for 300 so i was going to end up pocketing 600. Then i realized the job might not be what i want it to be so i decided to get a new bumper. Still havn't tho lmaooo its such a minor thing it bothers me that i have to spend any money on it.

Well I have 2 quotes both around $800 but now I am having problems with this guys insurance! I have pics of the accident scene and pics of his insurance card but I did not get a police report because the damage was minor and now the insurance wont complete (pay) the claim because their driver is unresponsive. I'm thinking well of course he isnt going to admit to it, so I now I'm waiting! Anyone have any experience in dealing with the insurance company on this type of thing?

Write them a strongly worded letter, be sure to include the term "bad faith" as in they are dealing with you in bad faith because of what they are and aren't doing.

Thats a bad word/phrase in the insurance business.
Also, file a civil suit against dude. When the sheriff shows up, he will comply.

Listen to wyldfyer. I thought about this thread as I watched our body guy last week reform a pushed in back bumper. He literally used a heat gun and a blow torch and heated up the ABS plastic and it became very maluable. Used a rubber mallet and this big block of hard rubber. He pushed most of it back into place by hand and got everything pretty much perfect with the mallet and got it flat with the rubber block. Say you do decide to go this route or whatever. Or if you get a check from the insurance company, it would be interesting to try.
