'08 Splash Shield Question

Greetings all.

I have recently purchased a pre-owned '08 coupe and while washing inside the rear wheel wells noticed that the splash shield (I think that's what it's called) is separated from the metal right at the top position on both sides of the car. All kinds of crap seems to be lodged between the two.
Upon further review it would almost seem this is by design- at least I see no signs of damage which would have caused this.

Has anyone seen this before or know if this is how things should be?

I'm taking the car in to have the muffler rattle issue addressed so I want to ask about this as well but would appreciate some advanced background so I am well-prepared for the service department.

Thanks, Steve.

If you're talking about the top of the fender line and that felt type material (fender wheel well liner). Then yes, thats how it is.

Thanks- that is exactly what it is.

Any advice on cleaning up in there where normal sized human hands cannot possibly reach? The car is very clean but I want to get up in there and make sure there is nothing hiding- plus I'm a little **** when it comes to cleaning and always like to include washing inside the wheel wells when cleaning the car.

You can push the felt liner up a little so you can have some access higher into the inside of the fender. I usually just stick my hand in there with a rug or brush. Then I go crazy with the hose and try to flush out dirt or any other debris in there.
