Hi folks. New member. 1st Post - new trans
I bought a new 2008 G37S Journey (auto trans) and, just as it turned 50,000 miles, the dreaded yellow "service engine soon" light came on. This happened a couple of years ago and, gassing up, tightening the cap turned the light off. This time that didn't work. I took it in to the dealership yesterday and today they told me they're replacing the transmission.
While I'm glad I'm not paying for it, I'm not feeling warm and fuzzy about it happening at all with such relatively low mileage. They said that it was a problem with 2d gear and when they pulled the pan off the bottom, they saw some metal filings. They said it would have probably completely broken down in time.
I previously had a used 2000 Infiniti Q45, a beautiful 4 dr. that was a real cream puff...beautiful ride. In fact, I would have kept it except that same lite came on. When I jokingly asked the mechanic what it was going to cost to turn the light out, he said about $3200. I almost fell down. In that case, they told me there were two smog valves (the Q was a V-8) and they might as well replace them both since they had to take the whole engine apart.
Since I only paid $6k for the used Q, I wasn't about to pay 3k to fix it. Luckily, a week later, the light went out so I scooted over to the dealer and traded it in on the new (then) 2008 G37S Journey.
I really love the car and, except for replacing the brakes and tires after 47k miles, it's been just rock solid and ran like a Timex until this transmission problem. I will, of course, be getting an extended warranty but it seems like 50k miles is way too new to be needing a new transmission, no? I don't baby the car but I do step on it at every opportunity. I love the performance.
Anyone else had this experience? They gave me zero trouble in replacing the trans and gave me a fairly new G35 4dr to drive around in the meantime so no dealer complaints here. I'm just a little concerned about the trans.
My old Q45 had over 135,000 miles on it with no trans problems when I sold it.
