If only the XS came in Manual this wouldn't be an issue. All-wheel, great for winter, but automatic=boring
RWD, manual more fun to drive, worse in winter.
Advice?

My 6MT rwd did just fine on most roads last winter with snow tires all around. Unless you live north of PA, I'd say awd is not a 'requirement' and definitely a con when you consider you can't get it in 6mt...

Not sure what you witnessed, but awd does not produce shorter stopping distances, which is what's crucial for accident avoidance in majority of situations.

THIS is what is killn me, 20yrs in manual then trying to do automatic? In a G to boot? ugh.
Unless I move to Audi, but can't for several reasons.
I'm in TO, we've had maybe a cm all winter, driest ever. Though it's still Feb, I'm not concerned.
Summer night cruises in auto, don't think I can do it.
Thanks for all your input though.

Also, the more snow your area gets on average, the more likely the municipalities are prepared to handle it. So as long as you can get your car out of your parking spot on your street, you're most likely good to go wherever you need to. You just will have a hell of a time doing so on stock sport tires.

I live in NJ. I got the AWD because the snow here is horrible sometimes. Every time it snows we need to drive somewhere and we replaced an AWD van with a G so we just got the AWD G.
If you get an okay amount of snow, you will be fine with snow tires.
