Optimal highway speed for best gas consumption?

I was getting 30mpg on the highway today with cruise control at ~58mph. Also my trip to school is over 80 miles a day but under 100. Not sure how many km I get on a tank but I believe I get over 200 miles but under 300.
@Paulie - One of the highways I take has a speed limit of 50......so theoretically I would have to speed (to get to 55) to get the maximum efficiency?
As soon as I hit city driving, my mpg just completely tanks.
I'm going to be getting an oil change soon, I'll get the filters and everything looked at when I go to do that. Just bought the car less than 2000 miles ago so I'm hoping the filters are clean.

I take road trips between Regina to Calgary (770km) about 6 times now and I found going 130km/h (about 80mph) was best for fuel consumption at highway speeds. I varied the speed from 110, 120, 130, and 140 for my first 4 trips. looking at the fuel consumption gauge, it was kept under 10L/100km going 130km/h the whole time except for steep hill climbs. And that's with an 09 G37S convertible. I hope that helps.
ps- I apologize to my fellow Americans, I didn't do all the conversions for miles. =D

According to studies backed by the department of energy, the average car will be at its advertised MPG at 55 mph. But as the speed increases:
- 3% less efficient at 60 mph
- 8% less efficient at 65 mph
- 17% less efficient at 70 mph
- 23% less efficient at 75 mph
- 28% less efficient at 80 mph
See the graph below (from fueleconomy.gov):
- 3% less efficient at 60 mph
- 8% less efficient at 65 mph
- 17% less efficient at 70 mph
- 23% less efficient at 75 mph
- 28% less efficient at 80 mph

Just because I'm still concerned about saving gas, doesn't mean I should get another car. That's like telling a construction worker to get another job because he's asking for the best health insurance company.....Gas mileage isn't that much of a concern, I'm a college student and I took care of my school expenses and my parents help pay for gas and I don't want to take advantage of that and I'm trying to optimize my driving habits so they don't have to shell out as often.
Anyways, took my moms car out today, it was under 2,000 RPM the whole trip :0

We all know driving like a grandma doing the speed limit or less will give you the best mileage. But who really like to drive like a grandma?
