HELP!!! I made a Boo Boo

Hey guys,

I want to make sure my baby is okay!!

I was doing about 80mph on highway and I hit the gear shiftier and knocked the car into N, I did not know the car was in N until I pressed on the gas, and when I did that I put the car into D again.. When I did that the car jumped a little and the slip light came on as if the tires lost traction.

I'm afraid I may have damaged the transmission, because the car kicked when I put back into D.

Please tell me everything is okay, this the first time anything like this has happen, I always baby my car.

Car just hit 15K miles 2011 G37S.

Thank you!

You won't. It can handle a lot more than that.

I did this too. Forgot I had a rwd car. I put it in N and revved it like a boss. Tossed it in D while it was revving and did a quick little mini burnout and the car jerked forward.

Also don't worry too much about the slip light, I see it 24/7 especially while turning and accelerating. Same goes for the flat tire light in the winter, seen it quite a bit in extremely cold temperatures.

Car has a 7600 RPM redline for a reason, don't be afraid to get it up there every now and then. Those 330 hp are all the way up there! Use them!

Are you saying your slip light came on after you put in into D while you were still doing 80? Or were you stopped?

I'd assume you were in the 6k+ range and then shifting it back into D, the car wanted the RPMs to get back into the 2.8k range. Since you had the RPMs real high, shifting it back into D is what gave it the jerky action. Not sure why your slip light came on though unless you're saying you were stopped, was in neutral, stepped on the gas and then shifted it into D. Then obviously your tires are going to slip.

He basically neutral dropped the car while cruising. It's fine. Don't get in the habit of doing it though.

You'd think with all the electronics and drive by wire, the nanny would keep the car from self destruction

Is it good for the car, no. Did you do any damage, not likely.

Sounds like you're okay brutha! I don't mean to hi-jack this thread in anyway, but its fitting for my odd question. My question is, will the ECU stop you from downshifting into a lower gear when you're already at a high RPM in a higher gear? Example: At 6,500 RPM's in 4th Gear and I mean to up-shift to 5th, but I accidental downshift into 3rd. Will the engine allow it to actually engage in 3rd being that I was at the top of the RPM curve in 4th?

I'm assuming no because I just found out that sitting still, whether in Neutral or Park, I cant rev past 4,500 as it stops me.

There's a rev limiter for when the car is stationary but it'll still let you accidentally down shift. Happens when you're driving autos in S mode. It'll automatically downshift for you if you're braking hard. And it'll be natural for you to manually downshift. Thus, you'd essentially go down two gears at once and the throttle will blip up...alot.
