Potential New Owner
Hi everyone,
I've been looking for a new car for quite some time and I'm pretty sold on getting the G37 S Coupe, it's just everything I could ask for and more for the price. The only real competitor right now is the Genesis Coupe because of the price, but when I take quality and value into account the G37 takes the lead by a mile. Anyway, I digress... I have a couple of questions that I'm wondering if you guys could answer for me.
1) I believe the 2009 models have the "self healing" paint on them, do people find these to be effective? I heard they discontinued it due to the high production cost and maintenance if you have to repaint a panel but I don't know if that's true or when.
2) Is it possible to swap out the red center information (between the dials) section in favor of the black & white version found in the 2010s? I saw the thread where the guy replaced the 2010 dials with the 09 dials giving that same look but I'm wondering if the opposite is possible.
3) I'm considering a used 2008-2010 (really don't like the 2011 sport bumper ), aside from the gauges, are there any compelling reasons to go with one of those model years over the other?
4) Any annoyances (even minor, like the passenger seat belt latch being so high) you guys have had after driving it for a while, stuff you don't really notice during a test drive. I've heard of people complaining about the blue tooth volume and other minor things like that.
If there's anything else you think I should know or be aware of before making my purchase please let me know. This is my first foray into the world of luxury sports cars, so any additional tips would be helpful. Thanks for your help in advance.

1) I have a 2011 so not sure if this answer applies to your question. But the Infiniti paint sucks. Period.
2) Not sure...
3) I don't like the '11 bumper either so I can understand why you'd want to pass up on it. I'd pass on the 2008 too since it was the first year of the second gen G and tend to have the most issues. If you can get a used 09/10 go for it!
4) Seats can get uncomfortable for some after long rides. I've also got bubbling in my seats. Replaced them once already. Bubbling again and dealership says they "can't" replace them twice. Also, random rattles here and there. Seat belt latch is a little far back but that's what you have to expect when buying a coupe.

The seatbelts are actually quite perfect, in my opinion. There is no trouble with them ever, and because they are very adjustable, you have many ways to fit them to your needs.
I think it's possible to swap out the gauge cluster, but you'd probably be better off with just getting a newer model that comes with it. It would be much easier just to get the older model's bumper on instead of digging through your interior.
In terms of the paint, the self-healing paint was there since the very first days of the G37. Even my '08 has it. It's not magical, so don't expect it to magically deflect all the rock chips, but it does work as they say, and I don't believe that they have discontinued it. It's a great little bonus our cars have.
The only complaint I've ever had about the G are its rattles. However, after test driving some BMW and Lexus cars, I realize rattles are probably in every car with time. If you're getting an '11 model, it will be very clean and rattle-free.
I recommend getting an '11, since you like the cluster, and just figuring out the bumper issue with an older-style bumper. You're never gonna see the bumper from where you are 99% of the time--the driver's seat--but you will always see the gauges.
The car is amazing, to put shortly. I've never had any problems with it. Forget the Genesis, though. That car is a different class with it's ****ty interior and bigger-but-slower engine. In the G37, you have BMW-quality with none of the BMW problems. In the Genesis, you get Hyundai no matter how much they try to hide the emblem on their car.
Such minorities as "Bluetooth Volume" are definitely the last factors which should impact your decision, I believe. You're not gonna use it that much, anyway. Go for the real good stuff which the G is full of: Looks, speed, quality, reliability, sex-appeal, etc.

I just got a slightly used (16k miles) '09 Sport with 6mt. I too was also considering the Genesis Coupe and drove the manual 2.0T. For a lower price than even a low mileage '09 used G they're not too bad and you get a brand new car, long warranty, with decent build quality. It just didn't wow me enough, obviously not as nice interior, power, and info center as a G and not quite the same caliber of "brand".
Wife has an '08 G35 sedan we got new so was comfortable with getting another G.
Only big issues I've come across in my coupe that took longer than a test drive to really realize was:
- the sport suspension is definetly stiffer and harsher than a non sport model. The wife's regular G is much smoother.
- just some minor rattles over rougher roads in the instrument pod and in the moon-roof.
- Nice blind spot on driver's side and tough to see even when trying to turn and look back.
- Trunk space is to be nice "minimal" but I don't need much too often
- Never had any issues with Bluetooth
- And since this is your first foray into luxury sports cars get used to burning through lots of premium grade gas!

I have a 11 also and the only issue I have is my seat bubbling and the dealer to tell me "Take a long walk of a short bridge" Been dealing with if since 1500 miles, have 7k on the car now. Other than that I love it.. An one of the one who likes the Sports bumper. Looking at getting it in the spring.

I don't know if this means anything to you, but I just traded in a 2011 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track for an 2008 G37S. Honestly, the Genesis was a great car, it was very similar to the G37 in power. The gearbox in the G37 is definitely better. Overall, I'm happy with my decision to switch to the G37, however, you can't go wrong with the Genesis Coupe if that's what catches your eye.

The paint does work. I have an 11 and I had an object hit my hood an hit my glass. It scratched the hood (surface, could barely catch it with my nail though) and glass. After a few days, the scratch is all but gone (you can barely see it).
