Thanks Fezzik, Amon_Ra & Itchytoe for answering my questions. I'm a bit confused now, does the STI-R Plus also do laser shifting? From Belltronic's site:
I'd presume it does, but I understood the wording from the earlier posts that the 9500ci had laser shifting but not KA-Band segmentation, while the STI-R Plus did KA-Band segmentation but not laser shifting. Did I just misunderstand?
Anyway, thanks again.
• Next Generation of Laser Protection - Multiple laser sensors, strategically positioned in the case, continually search for laser gun signals. Maximum range, including superior off-axis protection, is standard.
Anyway, thanks again.

The STI-r Plus can use the integrated ZR4 laser shifters that the 9500ci uses. The 9500ci people were stuck with it no matter what, but with the STI-R you have the option to use it. Problem is that the ZR4 pretty much sucks. Laser Intercepter is probably the standard everyone gets.

When I bought my G37 a few months ago, I had my V1 hard wired up by the rear view mirror. I can't STAND wires hanging down.
I like the arrows that indicate which direction the radar is coming from and it picks up radar way down the road. It has saved me numerous times

Happy with my 9500ix so far, which has proabably paid for itself. The false alert learning feature is kinda cool. My only other experience though was a piece of junk Uniden I owned years ago. The STI and the V1 seem like solid choices too, but they don't have teh sexy blue lights

Thanks again guys, appreciate the insight. I think this should be my last round of n00b questions about Radar / Laser, but I make no promises!
Can the STI-R have other laser systems integrated with it, or just the ZR4?
I'm very new to Laser technology, what would you guys suggest looking into? I'm aware there's a difference between laser shifting and jamming, though, tmk, jamming is illegal just about everywhere. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) I'll have to look into the legalities of using shifters and laser in general in my state, though at this point, my research is purely academic; I'm just interested in learning more about it.

Laser jammers are only illegal in Cali and VA... Jamming isn't illegal yet in most states
Mount the RD under the tint strip, my car was JUST broken into and they didn't even see it...so it's a good place to put it

I installed an Escort 9500ix with the hard-wire cord in my other car this past January. I have to say that it has paid for itself at least twice over so far.
Someone asked if they work, and someone else said flatly that they do not.
At the risk of repeating what others have said, here's my answer to that:
Radar detectors absolutely do work for detecting radar *signals.* What they do NOT do is detect police officers, nor do they detect radar guns directly. These are common misconceptions about radar detectors.
Police have radar guns, some of which operate in a mode called "instant-on." This means that the radar gun is only transmitting radar signals when the officer activates the gun. When the gun is not activated, no radar signals emanate from the radar gun. Therefore, there is nothing to be detected.
Some police have laser speed guns, too. Some radar detectors will detect laser as well. There's two things about laser that you should know: Laser has a really tight beam, so you might get tagged by laser and the detector may not even go off at all unless he happened to point the laser directly at your detector. The second is that if you do detect a laser, it's too late. You are already toast.
Just because the radar detector doesn't find any radar signals doesn't mean there are no police around. While it may be true that all radar guns are used by police, it does not mean that all police use radar guns.
So, even if one does have a radar detector, one still has to be vigilant. Being a radar detector owner does not give a person permission to drive in Full Idiot Mode.
Now that I have that off my chest, let's get back to the 9500ix.
This is the second detector I have owned. I had the original, tiny (well, tiny by the standards of the day) Passport almost 20 years ago, and it picked up everything: Door openers, burglar alarms, you name it. Once in a while it would save me from a ticket, but the false alarms tempted me to just turn it off sometimes.
The 9500ix has a GPS receiver in it, and it has some smart programming, too. Using GPS, the detector will announce fixed photo radar positions and red light cameras before you get to them. Also, if you drive by the same location 3 times and you determine that the signal is a false, the detector will not alert you again.
The interesting thing about that is that it works in reverse, too! If you had a location that always gave false alarms that the detector locked out, and then the falses go away, the detector will then remove the lock out.
What this means is that after you install the 9500ix, it will take about a week or three for it to learn all the sources of radar signals in your usual driving pattern. After that, it will stay pretty quiet unless there is a real alert.
One thing I have noticed is that some cars, particularly Nissans and Infinitis, will set off the detector. I'm pretty sure this is due to the active cruise control in those cars. Some people just leave their cruise on all the time, even if they are not using it.
I read somewhere (RadarRoy's site, maybe) that Escort and Bel are owned by the same company, and some Bels are essentially Escorts with the Bel name on them. If there are actually differences between the products, I don't know. But several Bel models sure look a lot like the Escorts and seem to have a lot of the same features.
No, I don't work for Escort or any other radar detector company. I'm just a happy owner.
