6AT/5AT Question....

Hey Guys,

I have a question. For the guys with the 7AT (2009+)....how do you like it? The reason I am asking is because before I purchased my G37, I drove a 2011 Mustang V-6, and a 2009 Challenger V-6.......both with automatic transmissions. I was disappointed in the "lethargic" response from the transmissions when on the highway. It took WAY too long for them to downshift when the throttle was pushed to the floor. The Mustang was the worst. Anyhow, my question is how is the shifting in the G37S 7AT? I have noticed that in my car that the downshifts and upshifts are just about right. They aren't too soft, and not too abrupt. Is this the same case with the 7AT? I know that the gas mileage is better with the 7AT, as it should be, but I am just curious. Thanks for any replies.

P.S.......I LOVE this car!!!......

The 2008 have the 5at and the 2009 have the 7at. There was no 6at available. There is the 6 speed manual.

I think you mean 7AT.

I prefer the 5AT in the wife's 08 G35 sedan over the 7AT in my 10 G37S. It always feels as if it doesnt know what gear to be in. DS mode is better but still not great. I'd always shift myself if it wasn't for the harsh downshift when coasting in 2 and it auto dropping to 1. Biggest pet peeve about the car.

I've had the tranny reprogram done as well and still don't like it.

Dang...sorry man. I have read some posts about this issue. Is this common, or isolated incidents with certain Gs? This was a similar issue I noticed in the 2011 Mustang V-6. Lethargic downshifts, and the upshifts when on the throttle were less than impressive. There was no hint of speed/firmness.....the gears just seemed to "pour in" with no sense of a thrust forward.....Does this make sense?....lol

In late 2009, I test drove a used 2008 5AT and loved it! I was about to close the deal and they told me they had some discounted dealer-driven 09's for only a couple thousand more. I bought one with only a short test drive.

Knowing what I know now, I wish I had bought the 08! Much faster shifting and responsive tranny. My 7AT is confused... there are several threads on this forum regarding this.

BTW, I had a rental 2011 V6 Mustang while in Santa Fe for 5 days. It was awful... I will never have a Mustang, at least not a V6. By comparison the G37 is WAY more fun to drive than the Mustang, but that's due to the power, not the tranny.

Dang...sorry man. So, with the couple posts that have been made it seems that the 08 model, with the upgraded VQ37VHR engine, mated to the 5AT, seems to be a good choice. It has the tried and true 5AT, with the upgraded engine. Am I close on this assumption?

Mine doesn't seem to have any of the problems mentioned. Performs exactly as it should!

I have a 7AT and love it too. I've driven a 5AT, but I find the 7AT to be not only much smoother but it's also quieter on the highway since the engine is at a lower RPM.

I'd easily take the 7AT over the 5AT any day.

One thing I really like about my 5AT is how responsive it is to throttle input. I haven't driven a 7AT so I can't compare but I can vouch for the smoothness of the 5AT. The only thing I don't like is how it really needs another gear. My 19 mpg average sure sucks.
