How far on half tank of gas?

I guess some of you guys know the grim situation here in Japan. My GF and I are planning to go to Osaka where things are a bit more calm. I only have half tank of gas and I cannot get any more in Tokyo.

If I jump on the highway, how far can I get on that amount? I know I will waste all of it in the city but car seems very economical on the highway. I figured the further I get from Tokyo, the more chances I will have of getting gas.

So here is the question: half tank, no stop-go, how far?

Of course my other options are bullet train or plane, but car is better..

safe bet: 150 miles.

if you drive really fuel efficiently, maybe 250. (assuming 25mpg and 10 gallons which is half of our tank)

150 max if you drive like a grandma, no way your gonna make 250 on half a tank. i get 260-280 on a full tank, 300 if i drive a little more subdued.

and good luck brother

If you drive in a higher gear, keep your rpms down and babysit that gas pedal you should be good for 175. Good luck and hope your friends and family are all safe.

yeah id say at 10L/100km, youd make it around 300km. then again the farthest ive made it is 500km on a full tank, not babyin it.

is it worth the risk to get stranded?

^ i don't think he has a choice. to be safe i'd say 250kms. i always find the 2nd half burns up quicker than the 1st half anyways.

OP - if your gas light comes on you should be good for another 60-80kms or so.

i get about 180-190 on a half tank. If i drive aggressively for say 5-15 miles then i'd get about 150-170 on a half tank. I always reset my odo just to get an average.

I usually get 175miles on 9 gallons doing 50/50 highway/city (doing 80 on the highway). If you are on a highway doing 55mph I'd bet you could get over 200. Good luck!

With the traffic in central NJ, I'm lucky if I get more than 140 miles with a 1/2 tank.

thanks guys. i took the safe bet and took the bullet train. was in Osaka in less than 3 hours while sitting back and sipping on a beer.

i would have made it in a car though. apparently there were plenty of gas stations after about 100km's out of Tokyo and there was no traffic.

but i didnt want to take the risk. what if there is another quake and they shut the highway? that said, the heated seats would have been nice. it's friggin cold!

Japan is trying to get things back to normal. northeast part of Honshu, pretty much everything above Tokyo is a mess. they are trying to restore communications and electricity. over 10000 people are still missing, 5000 confirmed dead. It will take very long of the region to recover, and with that nuclear plant, Japan's farming is gone forever.
