I bought my 2008 G37S coupe w/ everything except tech w/ 1460 miles, in 2009 (you read it right) for 28 and some change.
Resale, sale and trade-in values also depends on region as well.

You are not getting 28k for that car unless they are shafting you on the back end. You can buy G37S now with premium, nav, and tech, with anywhere between 22-30k miles for less than 29k, and that is at dealer retail. Trade in, 22k sounds about right. It's a 3 year old car after all. I got offered 24k for mine by one dealer two weeks ago, the rest have been around 22-23k. One was at 19k, but I swear he just pulled a number out of his ***. To put it in perspective, you can get an 09s for less than 31k (and that is just their asking price)

My experience with an 08 G35 XS. Wholesale, about 23k, retail about 27 to 29k. Dealer was trying to see if they wanted to wholesale or retail the car and get me out of the car for a lease on an 11 G37 XS coupe.
The 08 has 30k on the clock and some curb rash on the wheels, no gouges. Otherwise the car is in very good condition. So the deal went as follows, 1,000 customer loyalty, lease for 39 months at a little under 600/month (15,000 miles). Car sold to me for 1,500 over invoice, I did qualify for the 3 months "pull forward" lease program.
So compare "apples to apples". You may be thinking "retail" and the dealer is thinking "wholesale". If the dealer will give you 28k on that car as a trade in look carefully at the numbers, he is making it up somewhere. If the dealer put your car on their lot, they typically mark up the car between 3 and 5k. They are a business, and always make money in the end.
Good Luck.

Whassup fellas. Went to MB Freehold yesterday and let me tell you, never get your vehicle from that "dealership." It was THE SECOND WORST experience I ever had at a car dealership (first was BELL AUDI in EDISON).
Long story short, car was valued at 28K. Pay off is 31K so I figured, take the 3K hit and put it on the invoice price of an E350 P2, Pano & Night View Assist and we got a deal. The "salesman" comes back by saying nope, you'll have to pay MSRP for the E350 then. Basically, was told later via phone by a general manager, who didnt bother to come and introduce himself while this was going on, that I was being done a favor where the car isn't valued at 28K and were being generous and so by doing that, they couldn't discount the E350 by anything.
Needless to say, my brother and I were a bit irate. I think I'll have to give up on the idea of getting rid of this car early and just tough it out for the remaining payments.

I'm not sure you can blame the dealer when you already knew that they over allow your car by 4-5K. That's why I don't like to do a separate negotiation when trading a car. At the end, a dealer WILL make profits regardless which way you want to negotiate.

Anytime you get a high number on your trade, you pay full price on the new one, which is marked up. Your trade in value is the wholesale value, which is usually just under "rough trade in value". If you want to know how much a dealer has into a car, find its wholesale value, add about $800-1000, and thats the price you can get away with if you negotiate hard enough. Most people pay much more.

KBB doesn't buy cars, their figures are useless. Go to an autotrader or cars.com and search for your car, see what they are going for retail, and private party, and figure out what yours is worth based on that. You can also use edmunds.com, since they use actual auction data, as well as average trade in values, to get the prices they give you.
