OMG people!
Let me ask you a question...When you stink do you take a shower?
A car is the same f'ing way. Roll up your sleeves every 1K miles or so after the first 3K miles following an oil change, pull out the dip stick and take a napkin to the oil. If its still golden even slightly, your good. If its dark brown, its time to replace your oil. Its not rocket science and as long as you routinely change the oil your going to be fine and will not cause your engine damage or lose performance.
Rule of thump. If you use standard oil, change every 4-6K miles. Any less and its a waste of money and time -- literally. If you use synthetic, change every 8-10K miles.
