5 gear AT, or 7 gear AT

You really need to drive both and come to that conclusion yourself, there's pro's and con's for each.
The 5AT was and is my choice, expecially post tune, better matches my mission plan for this car. I'm a nut though, I actually like cruisng down the road at 3200 RPM...a quick hop to redline...

7 At would offer better fuel economy but since there are 7 Different gears the transmission will constantly be shifting up and down. The 5 AT would be smoother and not as harsh but you will lose some fuel economy. BTW, Red your G is insane bro, love it.

I had an 05 G35 cpe. with the 5 spd a/t which I traded in for my 09 xS sedan with the 7 spd.. I thought the trans. in the cpe shifted great and had excellent responce but when I drive the 7 spd. sedan I find a completly different feeling. It feels quite a bit faster and the transmission has not exibited any of the negative problems many forum members have complained about. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky 7 spd. owners. I've learned how to use the trans. in a way that works well for me and have no plans at this point to ask for any of the TSBs that are available. And by the way, this car is not babied, I love to get on it.

Not that im complaining...5AT feels great for me...just missed that feeling of having "COMPLETE" control of your car in straights or corners....But im married and the wife likes an auto..
If i was given the choice again..i would go for either the 6MT or 7AT though...as that car just needed that exxxttrraaa little gear at 120mph onwards (not for power...just for feel and engine noise-wise)...

+1....but 5AT I've heard better things about. The 7AT is famous for its "delay" in shifting. Much more freedom in the gears since its a smaller ratio, but when I had my 06 5AT, the shifting was so quick and clean!!
choosing betwee the two....5AT FTW!! Look for an 08 model before they came out w/ the 7AT.

I drove both when I bought my 2009. They had 2008s on the lot which were identical except for the transmission. I thought the 7at had a lot less shift shock and was much smoother than the 5at.
Im willing to bet people on here with the 5 will tell you to get the 5, and people with the 7 will tell you to get the 7 and not everyone who gives you their opinion has driven both.
Part of the problem, and Im sure it could have effected my decision, is that these transmissions tend to "learn" or adapt to their driver. So if there is a 5AT which is used or been on the lot, it might have "adapted" to other peoples driving. Then you might hop in a 7at which is right off the delivery truck which no one has driven and its just starting to adapt to driving. So I'd love to tell you to drive them both, but unless you reset each car, your results might be skewed.
Either way, I think both are good transmissions and there really isnt a wrong choice. Its going to be your preference.
And nethole, I live around the block according to your signature. When I came to this area, I had to trade in my manual because after 2 years of driving in traffic, it wasnt fun anymore. I was coming from pennsylvania and having a manual on open roads was a blast. But unless you live in DC and have to drive the beltway regularly for your commute, you really dont know. Driving on it one day a week or here or there or randomly wouldnt have swayed my decision, but regularly it took its toll after a few years. Theres only so much first, clutch, second, brake, repeat for 60 minutes each way a day that one person can take. (Although I'll take LA/NYC drivers opinions with a grain of salt, but everyone else really doesnt know unless they actually do it for a year.)
