Short Shameful Confession

'wanting' has nothing to do with it. I just have 4banger engrained in my head for all japanese vehicles, and V6/V8 for all american vehicles.
A 'small sporty coupe' that acts smooth, instead of jittery. *unheard of* :-)
Small sporty coupes aren't supposed to be smooth, hence it feels like a big old grandma car. [granted a big-ole grandma car that can haul/manuver/fly and has a nice interior and decent radio and nav-goodies]

I think this article puts it best:
2011 Infiniti G37 IPL Review: Blitzkrieg Your Commute | LegitLifeStyle.com - Your Source for Everything Legit!
"It dawned on me after I had left the car behind and began my journey home that I had been reviewing the car from the wrong perspective. I got into the car expecting a sports car and the simple fact is this – it’s not a sports car – it’s a Grand Tourer. When you think of the G37 IPL in that frame of reference it all begins to make so much more sense. You don’t need a double clutch gearbox if you’re stuck in traffic, you don’t need a billion horsepower if you’re commuting to work, and you don’t need a garish color or body kit if you don’t want to be laughed out of staff meetings.
A sports car should be a fast and exciting, with a rock hard ride, loud exhaust, big spoiler, and penchant for oversteer. The Infiniti IPL is none of that. The IPL is a refined luxury sports cruiser designed to blitzkrieg your commute. It’s made for people who want something sporty and refined at the same time and the IPL can tick both of those boxes.
The IPL is about giving the driver a gorgeous interior to get lost in while he stuck in a traffic jam. It’s about a sporty sound for the blast home and a quiet commute into work in the mornings. This car is the Jekyll and Hyde of daily drivers. The IPL is comfortable, stylish, and won’t draw the wrong sort of attention. It will get you to and from your office fast, efficiently, and has enough extra power and performance on tap to put an evil grin on your face anytime you need a break from your clients or sales report.
We’ve known for some time that the Infiniti G37 is the best 2+2 sports coupe on the market. The IPL is simply the best version of the best car in this segment and merits the attention of buyers looking for a car that combines practicality, performance, and styling into one sporty package."

Dude, if you feel the G drives like your grandma's Buick, I think YOU are actually driving it like a grandma would! But I have a solution for you to try! You are being too easy on the gas pedal. Trust me on this! I can duplicate the exact thing you are describing with my own G. Please do not be too easy on the gas pedal! If do you, this car WILL make you feel like you are driving a heavy, sluggish Buick!

I hate to see my mpg computer go below 19.
What I like about this car is how you can drive it like grandma when commuting to work but when the need arises, it becomes a completely different animal.

The G handles very differently than a lot of cars I've driven I'll admit it can feel slow and plodding sometimes, but it is very smooth. When you really push it though is when you notice why things are the way they are.
The steering feels heavy, giving you the feeling the car is extremely heavy on slow turns or the like, that same heavy steering feel is what gives the car its solid control at high speeds in much the same way my friends old C5 Vettes steering felt. For a light car it "felt" heavy but it wasn't.
It isn't jarring and abrupt like my old 350z either, my 350z actually "felt" faster due to power delivery...well I lined up with the guy who bought my old 350z and even with all of its bolt-ons it really didn't even put up close to a fight.
The car is a GT car, if you wanted more Sports you would get a 370Z if you wanted more luxury you would get a Lexus. It is right in the middle and it does its job like a swiss army knife.

I agree with you, the G37 offer a compliant but fun drive, an all-around brilliant package. While not as nimble as a 2800-3000 lbs sport car, it feels sporty and looks the sort too! A perfect GT car to relax when you come back from work and enjoy some twisties...
My 2 cents,
