Well the J is Japan, the N is Nissan and the third digit is usually used as a manufacturing number/letter to identify the car. It's possible they've changed it; in Canada they are still using JNK
My previous car was 1HG, 1 for USA, H for Honda and G for passenger car/USA

The SAE assigns the World Manufacturer Identifer which is the first three digits of the VIN. As pointed out JN is for Nissan but the third digit can be a number or letter. Depends on how the SAE assigns the code.
