How to drive a new G37

So I bought a new G37s Coupe and have been hearing different stories from my friends who don't even own an Infiniti and thus I didn't know what to believe until I stumbled onto this forum.

I heard stories ranging from staying under 3000 RPM for first 3000-5000 miles in order to let the gears adjust, to flat out just drive however fast you want it does not matter.

I also heard the engine will be faster after the 40,000 mile mark.

So I consider the guy saying that I can drive as fast as I want the guy with more experience with cars, I admit I hit 5000 RPM two or three times and maybe touched 6000 RPM once, did I mess up my car?

Thanks for any info.

Your fine. The manual says keep it under (i think 4k rpm?) for the first 1000miles.

There are no "gears to adjust" so i don't know what that means. The first few hundred miles will break-in your clutch, brake pads, and you should be good to go.

thanks for the info, so is it okay if i just follow the manual (under 4k rpm for first 1000 miles) now, or has my handful of 4k+ RPM damaged my engine?

Keeping under 3k is almost impossible to do. That is unless you are one of those that leaves your turn signal on as you drive 5 miles. I bought mine less than 2 weeks ago and have been keeping the rpm under 5K to get it to break in nicely, I think I read that somewhere in here.

I highly doubt your 4k+ rpm did any damage at all to your engine. The VQ37VHR is by nature a fun, relatively-high revving engine.. she likes it.

To be honest theres a bunch of different methods. Some say a "hard break in" will be better for the performance aspect but i dont know about long-term side effects.

Soft break ins on the other hand baby the car and possibly may lead to more milage and less problems.. but this is all just theories.

You'll find people telling you to drive it hard right off the lot, and then those who will tell you "oh dude the engineers who made the car know what theyre talking about!" then the counter argument -- "Engineers are just covering their butts"!

haha. For me, i tried to follow the manual.. but after 600 miles i gave in. Took it right up to 7500 and never looked back! But i traded the car in around 25k miles, so i can't comment on long term issues.

thanks for the comment guys, well I'm already halfway to 1000 miles, so I guess I will keep it under 4000 RPM until then, but is there a general consensus that 1000 miles is milestone I need to cross?

That is what I have heard and apparently most everyone will suggest "changing your oil".

you're gunna hear a million stories...........just drive it normally....dont worry about it. dont beat on it just yet....but dont baby it either. the engine is already broken in, its just all the other parts

so for the first 200 miles or so...take it easy on the brakes and tires. after that ur good to go

I was always told to drive the car how your going to drive it on a daily basis. I have always had that in the back of my head when buying new vehicles. I have no had any issues outside the transmission at 6k miles that was replaced under warrenty.

I went with the manual, but I am the play it safe kind of person. I guess we will know in about 6 years. We should all meet back here and discuss...haha.

If you search on the forum or just google "engine break in" or something similar you'll find 2 opposing theories. One tells you to take it easy until 1000mi so the engine can properly break-in. Another one will say that technique is for back in the days. But now with modern technology, your engine is broken-in from the factory, which is probably also true because Infiniti test driver takes your car out (in various speed and RPM probably) before signing off on it.

If you went up to 6k rpm during the "break-in" period, I'm pretty sure it's fine.

Ever see a "road test" on TV? Ever wonder how long they broke in the cars? LOL!

Seriously, if what you discribed damaged a G, the service centers would have to book appoints a year in advance. IMHO, your car is fine.

Just try not to keep it at the same rpm for too long. It won't break it going over 4k, I had 2 Gs w/ no problems.

best answer. no need to drive the car like a puss, but at the same time dont mash the pedal to the metal just yet.
