Oil change rip off???

Hey,
The other day I was talking to the tech at my local Tire Kingdom where I do my oil changes and the guy told me something I though was funny (not haha). I asked him how long should I wait before my next oil change if I use dinosaur oil, he said 3k miles. And what about if I use blended oil? He said 3k miles. So I asked what follows, what about full synthetic? He said 3k miles.

But the BMW (heresy, I know) dealership tell my wife to change her full synthetic every 15k miles.

I am using blended and I change it every 5k miles, but is that good for the car? What is the truth?

I changed mine every 3k miles no matter what oil I used (Ive only used mobil 1 synthetic) I have never herd anyone going 15k miles on one oil change....by that time the oil is broken down and no good. Now that im F/I I will be changing my oil every 1500-2000 miles. just be on the safe side. just my two cents.

I also use mobil 1 synthetic and change the oil every 3000 miles...if you learn how to do it yourself it becomes a whole lot cheaper, not to mention it's super easy

Regardless of what type vehicle you are driving car, motorcycle, etc., if you go on a forum for that particular vehicle there will be page after page of conflicting advice as to how often and what brand of oil and filter is the best to use.
The owners manual will state which weight of oil to use and how often to change it, depending on your driving style.
If you drive "PRIMARILY" under certain severe conditions, as stated in the manual, it is a good idea to change the oil and filter approximately every 3,750 miles.
If you drive "PRIMARILY" under regular driving conditions, change the oil at approximate 7,500 mile intervals.

It should not take a rocket scientist to factor when you should change oil and what brand of oil and filter you should use, but you would think so if you read all the posts devoted to it.

A full synthetic can go anywhere from 8-10K depending on your driving. I have used Mobil1 in every car I've owned and have gone 10K between changes with no problems. In the G I baby it and only take it 8K and now am on Penzoil Ultra and will go 6K then check to see how it's holding up.

Non synthetic I'd only go 3K but synthetic you can go much further

Always used Mobil 1 and changed every 8K miles. Same deal in my new ride.

I use amsoil and haven't done a full change yet, but at the 6k mark the oil was still clean.

Agree with Movinon...rely on the owners manual and use your judgement. In the 30+ year I've owned many kinds of cars and trucks I've always changed at 5K intervals and used the weight recommended by the manufacturer. NEVER had an engine problem. Currently have a GMC with 185K miles with no issues.

i get my oil change at the dealership (which is a rip off but i dont care) and i get ester oil which the total comes to about 120 i dont have time to change it every 3 to 5 thousand miles because i dont really have time to change it so often and dont mind paying for the extra miles and also get it for the way i drive.

I have owned 3 Audis (01 A6 4.2 Sport, 03 RS6, 06 A6 4.2 sportline) before my G37, I only use Amsoil, with my prior audis I would drain the every 15k or 12 months with no issues at all, now mind you that the normal drain for a audi v8 is 10k (using mobile 1). I say use a high grade synthetic, high grade filter, check it 3k, 5k, 7.5k to determine the best drain period for you. Currently I drain Amsoil at 7500, I have a 60 mile drive to work all highway...its still clean at 7500 but i drain it anyway.

I really don't think you could ever damage your engine by going with what the manufacturer recommends. If you drive under normal circumstances 7500 miles should be fine, especially with synthetic. You get some guys on here that will tell you to change oil every time you drive the car but it is totally unnecessary...
