Proper way to back up to drive way with MT?

I feel like i'm riding a clutch when i back up to my drive way. Do you guys let go of the clutch completely when you back up to the drive way or garage? i usually use clutch to go in and out to slow things down with a little bit of gas. Am i doing it right?

Thanks

Any time the clutch pedal is not fully engaged or disengaged, you're causing some degree of wear on it. So try not to use the clutch pedal as a means to regulate your speed. You can crawl at a really low speed in 1st/reverse without stalling, so there's really no reason to clutch a lot in your driveway.

I have to do the same. If I clutch out completely even with no gas the car is moving too quickly in reverse to navigate in the parking garage where I park.

So hit the brakes! Like I said, you can practically crawl without stalling.

reverse uphill is more of a struggle with this MT than any other I've owned. She requires more juice/throttle than most...

OP, you're doing the right thing. If you want to minimize wear then put in neutral, let the clutch go and coast.

Well, driving school years ago taught me to not use the gas when in reverse in a manual car. The speed in reverse is to be regulated with the clutch.

I use the clutch with some gas. If you want to let go of the clutch completely, be prepared to brake because it will be back up pretty quickly.

Well, I guess that depends upon a few factors. My driveway is more than 100 feet long and I like to back up the driveway (makes for quick getaways!) very often. So I do in fact completely engage the clutch and use the gas & brake pedals to control my speed.

If I had a 20-foot driveway, I could see using a combination of the clutch/gas/brake to regulate speed. But to say that you should never use the gas pedal to reverse a manual transmission car just seems silly to me.

+1^^ I think MSCA has the best explanation. If you're going a really short distance use the clutch to maintain speed but if you are going a longer distance you are probably burning the clutch more than necessary if you aren't fully engaging it
